Life on a Louisiana island slowly disappearing into the sea

The US state of Louisiana is slowly disappearing into the Gulf of Mexico as its fragile wetlands are eroded by rising sea levels.

Approximately 75 square kilometres are lost each year and the US Geological Survey has warned that the entire habitat - which represents 40% of all wetlands in the US - could be destroyed within 200 years.

The loss is partly down to natural evolutionary processes, but experts say human behaviour - including dredging for canals and the draining of the wetlands for development and agriculture - has made the region more vulnerable to storm surges.

Hey Frank, began watching the Amelia Earhart Investigation show on the History Channel on her disappearance and what someone investigating believes happened to her plane and her. They believe she actually crashed landed on an Island in the Marshall Island Milli Atoll. The photos they have had part of the island as a landing strip. They went back there, guess what, the landing strip area is still there now has trees on it. No sea level rise at all. This story proves there is no sea level rise even in the Marshall Islands. So how the fk can Louisiana have more sea water? Dude this is just too special.

Progressives don't realize that most people DONT think like they do.

Progressives believe that all problems can be solved if you just fix the institutions around it.......government to the rescue in ALL cases.

The rest of the world looks at this and says, "You fucking assholes............the water is rising and you picked a jerk-ass place to live. TIME TO MOVE!!". It is not that the seas are rising, it is that the ground is sinking.

That place is a delta. Let me say that again, a delta. It is not really "land", but moving sand bars that come and go as currents and sediment move to and fro. It only exists because the Mississippi was so highly silty and it was slow moving, so it deposited that silt prior to reaching the Gulf.

Because of channeling and dams, the silt now falls out much sooner, and in a more regular pattern (which is then dredged out to not impede the shipping channel).

Want to see this first hand? Look at photos of the Grand Canyon before and after Bolder Dam was built. In the oldest ones, it is dark and silty brown. After the dam, they are clear blue. That is because the silt in the Colorado River is deposited behind the dam, and only clear water is released.

Without silt, the ground is just soft mud, and erodes away.

This is Geology and Earth Science 101 stuff here.

And next, we will discuss the fact that in Sweden, either the sea levels are falling or the earth is moving up.

Well now, Mushroom, perhaps you should really take that 101 class in basic Geology. You would have learned that the sea level relative to land at any given point depends on what the land is doing, rising or subsiding, and what the ocean is doing, and how the currents in the ocean at that point affect the sea level. And when the glaciers melt off of the land, you have isostatic rebound, very evident in Sweden and Norway.

But we now have satellite altimetry, and can measure both the actual sea level rise, and the rise and fall of the land independently of each other. And by those measurements, the land is lowering and the sea level rising at an above average rate in Louisiana. Not a good combination for the people there.

No worries.......the community will adapt. Societies near the seashore have always adapted, rich and poor. Trust me......nobody in alligator country in the bayou is out tonight sitting in a boat, sipping a beer and worrying about the sea level. C'mon now.......these people survived a direct hit Cat 5 hurricane 12 years ago. Now they are going to be worried about the water rising 3 millimeters in a couple of years. Only the few who tend to the hysterical will and you always get that.

Now......go out in those precincts in New Orleans and ask them, "Hey........guess what? We can maybe slow the rise of the few millimeters of water rise........not really sure...............nobody is but some scientists think it could work......oh, yeah, almost forgot, you are going to have to pay double for your electricity bill if that's ok!!"
