Los Lobos cancels Scottsdale show

California rock group Los Lobos has canceled next Thursday’s show at the Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale in protest of Arizona's new immigration law.

The band released a statement this afternoon:

“We support the boycott of Arizona. The new law will inevitably lead to unfair racial profiling and possible abuse of people who just happen to look Latino. As a result, in good conscience, we could not see ourselves performing in Arizona. We regret the inconvenience this may have caused the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community, Casino Arizona, Talking Stick Resort and our fans, but we feel strongly that it is the right thing to do.”

Los Lobos had been in negotiations to play in Tucson in September, as part of Hotel Congress’s annual HoCo Fest. Now that seems unlikely.

“We were talking about details but we hadn’t signed a contract,” says Hotel Congress booker David Slutes. “Now I’m not hopeful, to be honest.”

Los Lobos is the latest band to announce a boycott of Arizona following the passage of SB 1070, which is set to take effect July 29. Last week a coalition of bands, dubbed Sound Strike, announced it was boycotting the state.

Sound Strike is led by Rage Against the Machine frontman Zack de la Rocha, who called the law, “an assault on the U.S. Constitution.”

None of the Sound Strike participants were scheduled to come to Tucson this summer, though bands like Ozomatli, Los Tigres Del Norte, Café Tacvba, and Rise Against are regular visitors.

So far, Tucson has only missed out on one concert. Cypress Hill canceled 11 days before its May 21 show at the Rialto Theatre.

No great loss as they are hasbeens. THEY will be the biggest losers.

A. Who gives a fuck about the political views of rock musicians?

B. Who the fuck are Los Lobos?

In a bad way, this is admirable. They are willing to give up several thousand dollars in support of their belief. If you are sincere, you should be willing to give up something real. This is serious cash on their part.

At the same time, I don't feel AZ is loosing much by this. And maybe even better off with out them.

I feel boycotts are stupid. No one should be coerced into an opinion.

YOu have no idea what you are talking about. This state is losing a LOT of money due to the boycotts.

Seriously, you have no idea what you are talking about.

A. Not me. Even worse are actors and their political crap. IE, Chuck Norris! ?? WTF
B. A band your not familiar with. You are so not in their demographic, so why should you care about this in any way. You weren't going to go, this wont affect you in any way, so............whats your point again? I forget.

Here's the risk behind boycotts: Los Lobos is betting that they don't need the money.

I wonder if they take a bath, wash hands, etc. whenever they're at home. THAT water comes from Arizona, and the water bill they pay goes to Arizona.

I thought Los Lobos had gone Adios Amigos.

They haven't had a hit for years.

This is exactly what you hear whenever a group does something the righty's dont like. EVERY TIME.

Actually they released 4 singles in 2006, 2 in 2004, 2 in 2002, and a CD that wasn't too bad in 2000. I didn't look to see their last actual Billboard or Rolling Stone hit. So mud is right, they haven't had a Hit in years.

I think they think that taking a political stand might give them a shot in the arm. Otherwise, I think the universal reaction is pretty much like everyone else was saying, "What? You mean they're still around?"

Didnt you guys try to say the same thing about electricity? How did that one turn out?

Good point, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm saying that if these clowns are really standing on principle, then they need to follow-thru across the board and not just piecemeal. My bet is that they aren't consistent. This is just a publicity stunt meant to somehow boost their dead music careers. Now I grant you, some folks will actually support Los Lobos in this. But in the long run, as I said before, the band members have to be willing to run the risk of alienating whatever fan base may exist in Arizona who are more interested in music than political statements and the people who may have taken time off of work, paid for tickets, etc who now have to put up with this bullshit instead.

If it were something else like apartheid (when it existed) or some other popular cause, I think the stunt would work. But I see this as either backfiring or not having the big bang for the buck that they thought it would have.

I have been to the rally's here for and against this bill, and believe me, there are way way way more hispanics against this bill.
(Oh an dthe attendance at the anti rally doubled that of the pro here).

I am not sure, but I think their fan base here is probably hispanic, or at the very least, mostly hispanic.

Agree? If so, they made the right call financially and morally. Good for them. Same is true with Shakira. I am waiting to see what Lady ga ga does.

I know they are really threatening the all star game being here and there is a good chance future spring training for the D backs is going to leave. Dont know about that one though.

Of course you will find more hispanics against this bill - they are the ones who stand more to lose as many are illegals!!

Shakira means nothing to many of us - ONLY to the hispanics and in this country we have many, many other races who don't give a darn about what Shakira, Los Lobos, or for that matter any foreigner that comes into our country to criticize it!!! When this is over and all is said and done, all who worked to punish AZ for this bill, will be the losers!

A quick question for you....do you remember when this state tried to no celebrate MLK's birthday? Do you remember how that turned out?

When you think you know how this AZ bill will turn out, remember, they tried something close to this once before and it didnt trun out too well for the politicians then either.

They were right about that one too. Martin Luther King was nothing but a shrill opportunist like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. He certainly doesn't deserve a holiday if the first President of the United States doesn't get one. Oh and zona, you could be the biggest pussy at USMB, you seem to have an edge on rdean.

Remember Prop 187 in CA? And how that completely torpedoed Pete Wilson's political career......

Who cares? How many times can someone listen to La Bamba anyhoo?

Quick answer - yes I do but you are comparing apples to oranges.

That was PRIOR to all these orgs fighting for another amnesty. I would bet my bottom dollar that if prop 187 was to make it to the ballot again, it would be enacted. The climate regarding illegal immigration has radically changed since that time. The invasion of late of illegals has many people angered - plus many have not forgotten 9/11 and the failure of this govenment to secure the borders!!

You skipped over the part where you were supposed to respond to "well, how did that turn out". :eusa_whistle:

Pussy indeed.

Threatening to shut down this state because it is being racist. Hmmmm. Seems like apples to apples to me. Actually this is stronger because the hispanics have the blacks bacing them up.

Good luck there Jan. You are so done. (Oh and no one voted her in as gov. NO one.)
