I lived in a predominately Latino neighborhood for 9 years in Denver, Colorado. Most of the signage in the local stores were in Spanish and I was the odd white boy in the neighborhood. My house was a small passive solar design behind a bigger 5 bedroom home, kind of a mother in law house but more of a bachelor pad. The Garcia family lived in front of me, I passed their test when they heard Santana blasting from my home........ they told me "for a white guy, you know more about Santana than anyone". # generations of the Garcias lived in that house in front, they kind of adopted me as one of the family since I was from so far away. It was an interesting education in the differences in cultures.
I would attend the almost nightly keg parties in their backyard/my front yard, always plenty of beer and pot to smoke. Being one from the deep south, I was surprised to hear the very liberal use of the word ******, they hated black people. They really disliked white people too..... they would always turn to me to say "but not you" when ranting about them. What really shocked me the most was their attitude towards illegals......."wetbacks" as they called them, they really hated them. Even worse to them than..."those fuckin ******* and their affirmative action", was the fact that all these illegals were working for so little and stealing the jobs from American Latinos.
Now, 20 years later, I work with a lot of Latinos from a variety of countries to the south. Most hang around with each other speaking Spanish even though they speak english very well and all that I have asked has said they will take their money and retire back home in the country of their origin.
When Obama nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, I overheard a conversation between some of Latinos in a break room. One was saying that he was proud that a Latina would be a Supreme Court Judge until he heard she was Puerto Rican...... screwed it all up for him.......... I just laughed at that....... silently of course, i don't want to get shanked.
