I think that depends on what era of socialism. In 1900, they were all for free speech, and the capitalists were beating them down in the media. Today, the far right and the far left are attempting to beat down and marginalize anyone who does not agree with them.

Most of today's Democrats are not true Liberals. They are now Socialists instead. No Socialist/Communist on this planet believes in Free Speech. So i would say that the current Democratic Party does attempt to silence Free Speech more often than the Republican Party does. It's not so much about Liberalism vs. Conservatism anymore. It's about Socialism vs. Conservatism at this point.
