Retirement At 60? Europe Faced With Cuts In Generous Benefit System

MICHAEL WEISSENSTEIN 05/23/10 04:55 PM

LONDON (AP) — Six weeks of vacation a year. Retirement at 60. Thousands of euros for having a baby. A good university education for less than the cost of a laptop.

The system known as the European welfare state was built after World War II as the keystone of a shared prosperity meant to prevent future conflict. Generous lifelong benefits have since become a defining feature of modern Europe.

Now the welfare state – cherished by many Europeans as an alternative to what they see as dog-eat-dog American capitalism – is coming under its most serious threat in decades: Europe's sovereign debt crisis.

Deep budget cuts are under way across Europe. Although the first round is focused mostly on government payrolls – the least politically explosive target – welfare benefits are looking increasingly vulnerable.

"The current welfare state is unaffordable," said Uri Dadush, director of the Carnegie Endowment's International Economics Program. "The crisis has made the day of reckoning closer by several years in virtually all the industrial countries."

Germany will decide next month just how to cut at least 3 billion euros ($3.75 billion) from the budget. The government is suggesting for the first time that it could make fresh cuts to unemployment benefits that include giving Germans under 50 about 60 percent of their last salary before taxes for up to a year. That benefit itself emerged after cuts to an even more generous package about five years ago.

"We have to adjust our social security systems in a way that they motivate people to accept regular work and do not give counterproductive incentives," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told news weekly Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung on Saturday.

The uncertainty over the future of the welfare state is undermining the continent's self-image at a time when other key elements of post-war European identity are fraying.

Large-scale immigration from outside Europe is challenging the continent's assumptions about its dedication to tolerance and liberty as countries move to control individual clothing – the Islamic veil – in the name of freedom and equality.

But... but... but... all the rest of the world is doing it why can't we? I mean sure they are on the verge of economic collapse and riots, but we clearly should be emulating them because everyone benefits from those collapses and riots.

Well, except the people who are murded and lose their livelihood.

Europe has been free to spend on programs due to the fact the USA has been shouldering a great deal of the expense for their defense.
Id like to see US cut off NATO and all federal aid as a step toward rations spending .

All you good patriotic worker bees need to do what's right for America and work more hours for less money.

And while you're at it, give back all those damn benefits your boss might be giving you.

Who needs a fucking vacation when you have a nice job to go to everyday?

"Prosperity Through Lower Wages!"

Excellent Counter to my OP... :doubt:

You can't Argue that the Socialist Experiment in Europe is Collapsing, so you Act Absurd in Response.

You don't have to Tell me you are a Liberal... Your Words do it for you. :eusa_shhh:

I'm only trying to help the cause.

Logic would dictate that if the European model is the recipe for failure, than the opposite has to be the formula for success.

I'm all in favor of working people making less money, getting fewer benefits, and working a crappy job that you hate until the day you drop.

And if I was still in the workforce, I'd be out there demanding less from my employer.

But I'm not so it's up to you to take one for the team. C'mon man, lead the charge and tell your boss you love America too much to see it go the way of Europe and make him take back all that excessive pay and benefits you know you don't deserve.

And don't forget, weekends are for working gratis.

So you admit that some aspects of Liberalism have merit.

Interesting . . .

I love a good platitude in the afternoon.

And what are you doing right in the middle of the workday arguing with strangers on the internet when you should be giving your boss 150% to prevent America from sliding into the abyss like some European Socialist cesspool?

Germany one of the most socialized countries in the world is bailng out Greece.

Maybe we should stop spending so much money on defense and the war on drugs.

Even Europeans are recognizing that they are headed over a cliff.

- Sweden is pursuing free market reforms.
- Cameron is talking about privatizing government services such as the Post Office.
- Several Eurozone countries are evaluating "how much" to increase the retirement age.

We should learn from this before it's too late.

The Madman Obama is bailing out the Unions here. We can see here the failure of Socialism. These dead beat Union delegates, Their contributors and the dumb ass sheople workers themselves still have their heads stuck up their ass even after their pensions can't be payed without the help of The Federal Government. LOL!!! Unions = Failure. Who would allow their Union dues to be used for whatever Political Agenda their masters at the top decided? What a bunch of dumb shits. ~BH

We are currently trying to reduce our deficits and I see nothing wrong with that. I don't really like the fact that the citizenry is making all the sacrifices though. I would prefer that say the banks who put us in the current crisis would partake in such effort.

As to the US it would help if they didn't start a war any given decade. Please keep voting for the current Democrats if you don't want to end right down the toilet.

Re tha malcontent peace indeed.

Great ....
Americans who know nothing about Europe, and if, they just know only the clichés.

Just to remind you:
It is the US which has - correct me - a deficit of approx. 12 trillion USD.
Germany has about 1,5 trillion Euros as deficit, but hey, West Germany had to buy the East and we got some nice benefits from the deficit.
What did you get for your 12 trillion ?
A war half lost, a shattered real estate market and high unemployment ?

Anyway, let us not forget how the whole crisis started:
The US spend more money than they actually got, banks gave credit to people who should never have got one and some bankers had some strange ideas how to make money.
In most european countries it was the same, so we all spend more than we had and have now to cut back. But what will the US cut back ?
