WASHINGTON - The Earth-scorching August firefight over health care has given rise to questions about the point at which stifling civil discussion damages the democratic process.

All across the country, conservative opponents are clamoring to disrupt town-hall meetings about the proposed overhaul of the nation’s health care system, using GOP-generated talking points to shout down Democratic congressmen who attempt to explain the plan.

The Constitution protects their right to speak freely, but Democrats say that they are limiting rather than promoting an open exchange of ideas.

Some experts on political organization say that despite the disruption of Democratic-run events — and divided public feelings on the health care overhaul — the shout-down strategy betrays an essential weakness on the Republican side, not a strength.

All dissenters are invited to freely participate in these meetings. It is the american way. The problem occurs when they are there to disrupt a meeting. That does not constitute free speech. The activities that are being objected to are plants who are there to disrupt the meeting, shout down opposition, block discussion of other points of view and deny others in the room an oportunity to participate.

Wrong. Politics is the ultimate form of war, no prisoners taken. Like it or not it is part of the game. As I have stated before in a different thread this ploy has been use by ALL sides since the beginning of recorded political history.

The opposition isn't a conservative thing. only 30% of the nation identifies themselves as conservatives and over 50% are opposed to HR3200, govt run health care.

Keep calling us non-party americans conservatives and belittling us media and washington, go ahead. Dont ask why when you get voted out of office and we stop buying your media.

If the administration and congress want consensus from the people just adress the issues and don't rewrite the whole system.

Better yet put all GOVT employees an politicians onto the public health plan, i guarantee over 80% of americans will let you do it then.
