Democracy isn't inherently good

By Yates Walker

When liberals dubbed the 2011 Middle Eastern uprisings an “Arab Spring,” they were doing what they always do, seeing what they wanted to see: aggrieved underclasses overthrowing tyrannical dictators in order to achieve democracy. And on the surface, that remains an accurate description of what occurred. The problem is that liberals assume democracy is a step toward their utopian vision of a people’s state — complete with women’s suffrage, freedom of speech, gay adoption and government-sponsored health care for all. But, given a democracy, most Muslim societies choose to live under Sharia law.

The truth is that democracy is not inherently good. It never was. According to Aristotle, democracy was the oppressive and self-serving rule of the people. Its opposite, the selfless rule of the people for the common good, was called a polity. Majority rule is only moral if the majority is comprised of moral individuals. And if the will of the people is to mutilate the genitals of little girls and kill Jews, then the will of the people should be stifled, ignored or altered.

By the by, if you wanted to know the newspaper headlines for the autumn of 2012, all you needed to do was listen to talk radio in the spring of 2011. Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Hugh Hewitt, Michael Savage, Mark Levin and others predicted exactly what has occurred in Egypt and Libya on President Obama’s watch: widespread instability, the adoption of Islamic law, the endangerment of Israel, the emboldening of enemies and the loss of two allies. Mubarak and Gadhafi may have been monsters, but they were our monsters. They protected our diplomats and kept relative peace with our allies. By not supporting them, the Obama administration transformed compliant, stable, horrendous dictatorships into non-compliant, unstable, horrendous democracies.

Under Sharia, certain speech is punishable by death. So is homosexuality. Unbelievers are formally oppressed as dhimmis by state mandate, and they must pay the jizya, a tax for their heresy. Women are bartered into marriages arranged by the men in their families. And if women are permitted to vote, they do so in a veil. Curiously, by allowing Mubarak and Gadhafi to be overthrown, a real war on women has been facilitated by American leftists...

Yes sure, we could have supported both dictators like Russia is supporting Assad in Syria and ended up with the same situation in both countries.

Aren't you calling for the Administration to do something in Syria now too?

We are also supporting radical factions called 'Rebels' in Syria as well. So no, i'm definitely not calling for us to do something in Syria.

The term Arab Awakening was floating around State Department circles last year instead of the term Arab Spring. It does speak better to Arabs waking up to their roots, their anti-Israel/western roots where outsiders aren't welcome and the strongest/loudest muslim in the mob wins the support.

What is true about Egypt and Libya is that their so-called Democracy is not like Iraq. Iraq is a richer country with their oil and can provide more upward mobility whereas Egypt and Libya are dysfunctional.

Libya is British oil supporters and the mob which is made up of nomad tribes and terrorist groups. Taking out their dictator without a proper plan to counter a vaccum has created the mess we have there now.

Egypt was a pro-US country until Obamination let the mob take over. Now, we are asking them to behave and they are taking our money to be nice to us. Reality is they will take our money but won't be our friend despite how many apologies Obamination makes there and here to them.

Again, liberals show they are amatuers in foreign policy and national security issues. Their amatuer hour in the 90s only brought us 9-11 thanks to Bill Clinton. What is Obamination going to leave Romney....a nuclear Iran?

How odd he lumps women's suffrage and freedom of speech in with gay adoption and universal health care as the liberal utopian state which he is clearly denigrating!

That is very, very telling.

If you ever wonder why lefties believe the right will take us back a century or two, this kind of stuff is why. This sneering at women's suffrage and free speech. Holy shit!!!

Also, can you provide us an example of a Muslim democracy that lives under Sharia law, please? And explain what that means while you are at it.

I would say Turkey is probably the most democratic of the Muslim nations. And in Turkey there is a distinct separation of church and state.

The guy who wrote that article is wrong.

There is a fight in the Islamic world between the secular peoples and the extremist Muslims for control. We need to be supporting those secularists in their desire to achieve a separation of church and state.

These nations are going through the same struggles Europe went through with Christianity running states a few centuries ago.

There is a lot of short-sighted ignorance in our country about these matters from a historical perspective on both the left and the right.

This is not a problem which is going to be solved overnight. And ignorance from the West is just going to drag that process out even longer.

Instead of painting over a billion people with the same brush, try to educate yourselves on the various elements which actually exist. Stupidity and bigotry just polarize an issue and prevent a sane middle ground from solidifying.

I've been watching the news and these Islamic nuts HATE Obama.. I think they see him as a traitor being he grew up and was schooled to be muslim.. He's provoked a fire in these people with his Appeasement policies by leaving NO ONE, an empty void of dominance in the region to be filled.. The Muslim Brotherhood stepped up and in and now we see the seeds of Sharia.. Thanks to Obama for personally coddling the Brotherhood. He has cost America in lives, security, treasury, and our appearance of being extremely weak. He has endangered Israel while emboldening Iran.. This FOOL MUST go.

Exactly, he bred this. He has to take responsibility. Burning effigies of Obama should have given him a little clue.

What every one has said forever and what Progressives and Paul doesnt understand....Show weakness to these murdering scum and they riot......They dont respect weakness.

Meddling in Middle Eastern affairs with the motive of spreading democracy in the ME is one of the fundamental core principles of neoconservatism.

They took down the towers on 9/11 because we had troops in Saudi Arabia. They don't respect misguided projections of strength either.

They took down the towers on 9-11 cause Clinton was a pussy and didnt take out Osama

When I read topics like this, it occurs to me that the word "Muslims" is like a giant Rorschach inkblot to most people here. Your comments reveal more about your state of mind than the true nature of that which you are perceiving.

Bin Laden neither planned nor carried out the operation.

Sentiment in places like Pakistan is turning against the US in a large part because of President Obama's use of drones to kill terrorists.

Should he stop that practice? Would letting the terrorists alone show our strength?
