Barely a decade ago, Lewiston, Maine, was dying. The once bustling mill town's population had been shrinking since the 1970s; most jobs had vanished long before, and residents (those who hadn't already fled) called the decaying center of town "the combat zone." That was before a family of Somali refugees discovered Lewiston in 2001 and began spreading the word to immigrant friends and relatives that housing was cheap and it looked like a good place to build new lives and raise children in peace.

Since then, the place has been transformed. Per capita income has soared, and crime rates have dropped. In 2004, Inc. magazine named Lewiston one of the best places to do business in America, and in 2007, it was named an "All-America City" by the National Civic League, the first time any town in Maine had received that honor in roughly 40 years.

"No one could have dreamed this," says Chip Morrison, the local Chamber of Commerce president. "Not even me, and I'm an optimist."

Lewiston's sudden jolt is reflected even in enrollment at local universities

Although University of Maine enrollment has dropped systemwide since 2002, the student population at its Lewiston campus jumped 16 percent between 2002 and 2007. And Andover College, which opened a campus in Lewiston in 2004, had to start expanding almost immediately to accommodate a boom in applications.

Enrollment doubled in two years. The reason? "Young people didn't want to go to a place that's all white," says Morrison.

Practically everyone in Lewiston credits the Somalis' discovery of their town with much of its newfound success. "It's been an absolute blessing in many ways," says Badeau. "Just to have an infusion of diversity, an infusion of culture and of youth. Cultural diversity was the missing piece." The question is whether the rest of Maine—and other states like it—can find their own missing pieces.

I'm suprised the Americans of Lewiston haven't had such a gutful that they are throwing the somalies out themselves.

This is what happens when muslims get to be a significant percentage of the population. They do it every place they go.

LEWISTON — In the early evening on the first day of summer, a large group of Somali boys approached a woman on the corner of Ash and Pierce streets. According to police reports, they intimidated the woman and slapped her in the back of the head before scattering into the downtown.

Five days later, shortly after midnight, a man was accosted by a group of Somali boys outside the Big Apple on Main Street. Police reports say several members of the group punched the man and took money from him. They then fled in a car.

Later that night, a woman in her late 60s was beaten by a group of Somali boys and relieved of cash while walking in Kennedy Park.

Five nights later, another man was jumped by a group of similar description. He resisted the gang and was beaten badly. He required surgery.

Throughout the summer, similar reports have come into the Police Department. Witnesses and investigators say swarms of Somali boys, some as young as 8, others in their late teens, overwhelm solitary victims through sheer numbers.

Not just Lewiston, but Nashville is also a designated somalie destination center.

Police say Kurdish Pride members were involved in at least one murder, multiple beatings and shootings, drug dealing, illegal weapons and vandalism. Incidents include the 2006 attempted murder of a Metro Parks Police officer and multiple graffiti messages threatening a Metro Police Gang Unit detective....

As in Lewiston, when residents go to the police, they find out that the policy have no authority to deal with muslim violence. They must appeal to the elders and mosque leaders because when muslims get that numerous, they don't recognize the lawful authority.

Maine[1][2] is a "shall issue" state for 'concealed carry'. The issuing authority are the local police, or the state police. A permit to carry a concealed firearm shall be issued within 30 days to a qualified applicant ( who has to show proficiency in the use of pistols) and who has been a Maine resident for at least five years, or within 60 days to a nonresident or a resident for less than five years. The permit is valid for four years. A permit to carry a concealed firearm is required when transporting a loaded firearm, either concealed or plainly visible, in a vehicle. However a concealed carry permit is NOT require for transport an unloaded firearm inside a vehicle if it is 1. In plain view 2. Concealed within the trunk again completely free of any ammo within the chamber and/or magazine well. A permit is not required for open carry as a pedestrian. This can be done lawfully with rounds in the magazine but no round in the chamber.​

Ah to portray all Somalis as darling angels is as bad as painting all Somalis as devils.
Not one people from one country are the same. You need not defend good Somalis. They stand on their own.

Toronto embraced them. My fave video shop owner was from Somali. Totally cool dude. Wouldn't hit me with extra charges if I was a couple of days late on the Burbs or Ghost.

You get bad gangs coming out of every country. The biggie here and everyone knows it is Kingston. Out of Jamaica. Now you can have a million to one great Islanders but all you need is one gang out of Kingston and everyone black balls them and islanders.

We really have to stop doing that. But on the other hand, we have to stop defending nations as a whole.

There are good and bad in all countries.
