The white slave trade.

The White Slaves of Barbary

Much attention and condemnation has been directed towards the tragedy of the African slave trade, which took place between the 16 th and the 19 th centuries. However, another equally despicable trade in humans was taking place around the same time in the Mediterranean. It is estimated that up to 1.25 million Europeans were enslaved by the so-called Barbary corsairs, and their lives were just as pitiful as their African counterparts. They have come to be known as the white slaves of Barbary.

Romans had slaves from Northern Europe.

Slavery is part of human history. And it is good that it is (for the most part) gone.

Hate threads that presume schools are the only place you can learn and that, if you didn't learn something there, the all-knowing OP is here to enlighten us.

Fact is - in the US, in K-12, it's history that affects or is part of the US that is taught. The Atlantic Slave Trade and Slavery of blacks was a huge part of American history. That is what is going to be taught because that is what helped shape this nation.

The OP is trying to minimize that.

Not just minimize, but obscure the real and ongoing story that, as bad as slavery is, the real legacy of slavery in the Americas is racism. The OP says we're not taught certain things, but cynically omits the fact that the descendants of the slaves of the Barbary pirates don't face racism today. In that omission lies the story of slavery in this country and its continuing effects.

Slavery is not gone at all, and in fact there are more slaves now than in the 1850's. 'Social Justice Warriors' can't be inconvenienced by fighting real slavery, so they focus on irrelevancies like statues and posturing in front of cameras as if they're Doing Something N Stuff.

... but cynically omits the fact that the descendants of the slaves of the Barbary pirates don't face racism today. In that omission lies the story of slavery in this country and its continuing effects.

That's because they left few descendants; they were mostly just killed when no longer useful. Ever wonder why, after over 15 centuries of an African slave trade, there are few blacks in the ME, while there are millions in the U.S.?

What does that have to with anything? The OP was about the WHITE slave trade.

ps

"
according to the 1926 Soviet Census 82% of population in the Soviet Union was rural. Kolkhozniks and individual peasants did not have passports and could not move into towns without permission. Permissions were given by chairpersons of collective farms or rural councils. Repeated violation of the passport regime was a criminal offence. Passports were issued by the People's Commissariat of Internal Affairs (Soviet law enforcement) and until the 1970s had a green cover"

in reality , Soviet peasants got the normal passports only in the 80th...

Why stop there? Slavery has always been around and still is.

The interesting thing is how it relates to American history. Massachusetts was the first colony to legalize slavery. Racism was created. Blacks and whites lived side by side, married, had children. The key thing is that Native Americans knew the layout of the land and could escape. Whites looked exactly like the movers and shakers and could not be differentiated so..........tag you're it black people. First the act and then the justification which is where the racism kicked in.

All of it is bad but it is the one that most impacted and directed US policy which is what is taught.

You brought it up, it got responded to. Your talking point was just ignorant.

blacks are just as racist as whites
in fact they commit hate crimes at twice the rate
Offenders
most whites in the south didn't even own slaves

They learned from the best! The final comment is irrelevant since, despite not owning slaves, racism was as endemic as it was among those who did.

sure --you think whites are the only race capable of evil--sure -blacks, Native Americans, etc are not evil, not human...they are so different than whites --so much better

Now you think you're a mindreader?!?! I never said anything like that. All you're doing is regurgitating buzzwords to make yourself feel better.

Picking cotton did not shape anything. Although it made Jews in Newport wealthy.

A dull mind and a narrow view seldom lead to understanding.
