The golden rule is a marvel of simplicity and a central piece of every religion. Why then do no religions preach the golden rule? Sojourners is a religious exception.

Consider for instance our leaders all with excellent healthcare provided through their employer government, and yet so many seemingly religious people, fight against healthcare for all Americans for reasons that are all beside the point. Even medicare or social security would never pass today.

"Karen Armstrong looks at religion's role in the 21st century: Will its dogmas divide us? Or will it unite us for common good? She reviews the catalysts that can drive the world's faiths to rediscover the Golden Rule."

I am sure that not following the golden rule is not only a behavior of the "religious" people. As a matter of fact, the non-religious claim that rule as their own, and refute that is is even Biblical. Those same people are unwilling practice what they preach. The Armstrong religion is not any different. When they are preaching the "golden rule" they are saying that some people are wrong in how they teach and preach.

Ms Armstrong said that gays are not being treated by Christians as the golden rule teaches. Homosexuals, the people, are not treated any different than anyone else by Christians. The thing they represent is something that Christians believe is immoral, thus, we preach against homosexual behavior, while at the same time loving the homosexual.

Compassion does not have to love immorality. Intolerance is not necessarily a violation of the golden rule, but may well be a way to make the golden rule work.

Good grief, Charlie Brown....Not that stale old chestnut again!

Here's a better idea.....Let's make politicians and bureaucrats live only on the wages and salaries they make, and give them NO fringe benefits at all?

No matter how much you try to pretend otherwise, you will never find anything in religion that justifies government interfering and destroying the health care system.

If you want to actually live the golden rule, how about to stop trying to foce them to do things you want them to do? Or do you really want them to be able to force you to do thing you dont want to do?

Ah yes, unless someone supports your propositions to screw up health care and provide more government interference in our lives, they are greedy. Because there is no possible reason anyone with compassion for others would object to you screwing people over.

The Golden Rule in my opinion brings only self-deceit & harm to the psyche. The Silver Rule: Do unto others as they do unto you is a far more realistic approach in/to our society.

So you WANT to pay 75% of everything you earn to pay for lazy slugs who don't want to earn their own health care.
And (again by the golden rule) you don't want to have any say in the matter.
Because that is what you are asking of others - bow to someone else desire and pay from their own pocket for others who are too lazy or stupid to provide for themselves.
