"AS the nation teeters at the edge of fiscal chaos, observers are reaching the conclusion that the American system of government is broken. But almost no one blames the culprit: our insistence on obedience to the Constitution, with all its archaic, idiosyncratic and downright evil provisions."

snip....

"This is not to say that we should disobey all constitutional commands. Freedom of speech and religion, equal protection of the laws and protections against governmental deprivation of life, liberty or property are important, whether or not they are in the Constitution. We should continue to follow those requirements out of respect, not obligation."

snip....

"If even this change is impossible, perhaps the dream of a country ruled by “We the people” is impossibly utopian. If so, we have to give up on the claim that we are a self-governing people who can settle our disagreements through mature and tolerant debate. But before abandoning our heritage of self-government, we ought to try extricating ourselves from constitutional bondage so that we can give real freedom a chance."

The consitution has ways "out" built in, The amendment process, either via the legislature/states or the States themselves via Article 5 Conventions.

You have no better solution and can not come up with any better solution.

That is how Good and Most Excellent of a job our Founding Fathers did at the Convention when they intelligently designed our Constitution and supreme law of the land.

It is Ordained and Established by Them.

every single complaint you listed happened because democrats and republicans ignored the constitution and not for the reason you stated

its time we started reading and applying the constitution

Neither do right wing christo-fascists.

I have heard "the constitution is a CHRISTIAN document" and "only CHRISTIANS are real Americans" thousands of times.

Problem with people like you, duke, is that you can only think in opposites. good or bad, right or wrong, with me or "agin" me.

You think anyone who isn't waving a nazi flag must be a "communist"

LOTS of people think certain social programs make life better for everybody and meanwhile we can still enjoy our freedoms.

I want YOU to be FREE to be christian or muslim or any religion you want!
and I want socialized roads and bridges that are taken care of regularly.

I want YOU to be FREE to smoke tobacco!
and YOU want ME to (SOCIALISM) PAY for all of the health problems you develop by smoking tobacco your whole life!

I want gays to be FREE to be OUT and to MARRY and to receive equal rights and benefits!
and YOU want gays DENIED the right to marry so they pay MORE IN TAXES which BENEFITS (socialism) YOU!

I want people FREE to smoke pot!
and you want to criminalize pot, wage war on pot smokers (costs $$$), destroy lives and seize property!

Turns out that conservatives are more SOCIALIST than liberals!.....we want everyones' money for affordable health care! while YOU want MY money for YOURSELF.

Our Constitution is too complicated for the right wing. The right wing, never gets it.

we try to dumb it down, whenever we can.

The opinion piece was written in 2012. You mentioned it was an older piece. The writer of the piece was wrong. The constitution has a mechanism for amendments. The Constitution has proven very adaptable because it was written as a political document and not an economic one. Strict constructionism has always been a joke to me because the founding fathers could not agree as to what the document meant, but we are to read their minds today. The Constitution is a lIving document and that is why it still matters 200 plus years later.
