The Church has always had liberal elements but was instrumental in properly interpreting the teachings of Christ. You should read the catechism on the subject of socialism versus free enterprise. It is most clear.

The reformation on the other hand got away from Calvin. He couldn’t control the splintered groups of which many leaned towards socialism. You should read the Socialist Phenomenon for more on this subject.
