Lax gun laws provide criminals with guns

States with lax gun laws had higher rates of handgun killings, fatal shootings of police officers, and sales of weapons that were used in crimes in other states, according to a study underwritten by a group of more than 300 U.S. mayors.

The report, which was obtained by The Washington Post, found that 10 states, including Virginia, supplied 57 percent of the guns that were recovered in crimes in other states in 2007. The 38-page report is based on an analysis of annual crime-gun data compiled by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The analysis tracks guns used in crimes back to the retailers that first sold them.

Virginia ranked sixth last year as a supplier of out-of-state crime guns per 100,000 inhabitants. West Virginia topped the list, according to the study by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan coalition headed by New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I) and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino (D). Maryland ranked 28th.

"It's only a small group of states responsible for interstate gun trafficking," said John Feinblatt, criminal justice coordinator for New York City. "Not only do their guns victimize people from out of state, they have higher gun-violence rates themselves."

The District, which prohibited handgun ownership for 32 years until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled the ban unconstitutional this year, exported no known crime guns in 2007, the report says. There is one licensed dealer in the city but no gun stores. The report also shows that 975 crime guns were recovered in the District from other jurisdictions last year, a per capita amount that far exceeds any state's.

Pro gun states are providing criminals with guns.

It's a public service.

But they'll always get guns. Of course they're going to go to the states with the lax guns laws, that just makes the most business sense.

If all states had the same gun laws then they'd be more spread out but I doubt their total numbers would decrease much.

The trouble with criminals is they will get guns no matter what the law is. Laws only apply to law abiding people, not to people who break the law. This is what is the matter with all gun laws and why they don’t work.

Not true at all.

The less available guns are in general, the less available they are to criminals. States with the strictest gun laws generally have the fewest gun deaths.

Here's what most restrictions on our 2nd Amendment rights gets you the US citizen, yeh tell that to the citizens of Mumbai India read the link following,

SECOND AMENDMENT

A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free
State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be
infringed.

George Washington- Firearms stand next in importance to the Constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence. The church, the plow, the prairie wagon, and citizen's firearms are indelibly related. From the hour the Pilgrims landed, to the present day, events, occurrences, and tendencies prove that to insure peace, security and happiness, the rifle and the pistol are equally indispensable. Every corner of this land knows firearms, and more than 99 99/100 percent of them by their silence indicate they are in safe and sane hands. The very atmosphere of firearms anywhere and everywhere restrains evil interference; they deserve a place with all that's good. When firearms go, all goes; we need them every hour.

Exactly hit the nail dead on the head!, its called 2nd Amendment citizen Black-male, or hi-jacking, gun laws will never succeed because they only work for the criminal that doesnt registure them anyways, better known as weapons BLACK-MARKET...

It isn't much of a debate. It's just common sense here. The government wants to know which individuals has guns so if need be they can take them from you and will know where to find you. That is a scary thought.

Not true at all.

The less guns are available in general, the less guns are availble for decent folks; the less capabable are decent folks in defending themselves against better armed criminals. Criminals get guns from wherever they are available.

Why do you prefer that they steal them?

States with the strictest gun laws generally have the fewest gun deaths.
Why do you prefer "[other kinds of] deaths" to "gun deaths"?

There are far more deadly weapons that are much more common and easier to get than guns. Knives are still the most preferred weapon of many criminals. Hell, I could kill an entire building with a bottle of bleach and peroxide than a gun, and probably get away with it.

Lax gun laws provide criminals with guns

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- Ten states are responsible for the bulk of illegal guns that are shipped across state lines for use in crimes, according to a report released Friday by a national coalition of mayors.

Maybe you better read this again . It’s not lax gun laws that are the problem it’s the bulk of illegal guns that are shipped across state lines for use in crimes.
The laws says that these guns in question are already illegal.

About 30 percent of guns traced by federal agents in 2006 and 2007 during crime investigations were bought in a state other than where the crime occurred, said the report by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which largely blamed the transport of illegal guns on states with lax gun laws.

This sure makes sense. The guns are illegal and being transported by criminals but to fix this we need more laws. How about just enforcing the law that we already have that makes these guns illegal already? How about blaming the transport of illegal guns on criminals not the laws?
But I guess if we have more laws the criminals would probably go by them.

Bah! In the US we are more interested in fixing the symptoms ... we don't have time for actually correcting the cause. *evil grin*

This thread is crap and so are Chris's assertions (as usual).

Washington DC had the strictest gun laws in the nation. They were also during that time the murder capitol of the nation for several years.

It is no coincidence that Virginia and Maryland are cited as examples of exporters of guns that were involved in crimes across state lines. They both border DC. The number one crime these handguns were involved in?

Owning a handgun in DC in violation of the hand gun ban !

Go figure.

Thanks for pointing out the hypocrisy Chris. That really is a public service.

IMO, Unfortunately as you have demonstrated, all of the limitations will not ensure lower crime rates.

Where I live we have had the conceal carry law for a while now and we have reasonable background checks on firearm purchases. As the sheriff's association in the state has voiced several times now, the conceal carry law has caused no problems and things have actually went well. There has been no increase in crime due to this and frankly though not reported enough, many crimes have been diverted as a result.

Responsible gun owners are not the problem.
