There was supposedly a malfunctioning warning system designed to prevent this sort of occurrence. How many other cases have there been in which a government-provided system existed to warn the vehicle owner if it was getting to hot inside for the animal? Maybe the reason why the cop will not be charged is because of whatever was being done during the time that dog was in the car alone. Not to say that the dog's life means nothing in the grand scheme, but that cop may have been in the middle of something more severe and if they were, walking away from that scene only would've dug his hole deeper. The cop who left the dog in there did report what happened and so it isn't like they tried to cover it up. Instead, full responsibility was taken and in my opinion, consideration for doing that much at least should be shown.

Auto driving cars require a driver to be aware and ready to take over. If the technology fails, the driver is responsible for the accident it causes. The same is true of all technology. Autopilots do not relieve the pilot of responsibility. Just as the same technology does not relieve the Captain on water.

By that logic, kids who get a hold of guns and shoot a sibling should be given more guns. Drunks who crash and kill someone should be given a new car. As long as they feel bad, or claim to, all is forgiven right?
