Lawmakers pile up personal debt

Forty-eight members of the House and three from the Senate had more than $10,000 in family credit card debt last year, with some carrying balances totaling more than $50,000, according to their personal financial disclosure reports.

Most of the lawmakers with high card debt, though, denied they were poorly managing their own finances, saying they were beating the prevailing rates and avoiding the high fees. Although most said they were keeping a close eye on their credit scores, some said the rating was not a concern to them because they weren't planning to borrow money soon.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) reported that his wife, Cindy, held a platinum American Express card with a balance of $50,000 to $100,000 and a Chase card with charges from $15,000 to $50,000. The first card had a zero percent interest rate; the second, 15.99 percent.

Rep. Robert Wexler (D-Fla.) owed from $50,000 to $100,000 on several cards.

Rep. Charles Gonzalez (D-Texas) said his more than $50,000 in card debt was due to "family obligations." He recently consolidated his debt "at a rate unattainable through a bank," he said.

Cindy McCain is an heiress...she is worth millions of dollars. Hardly a concern.

I hate those in Washington more than you do...but this is a stupid, nonstory.

You would think that if she has that money like you say she would put into her husbands broke ass campaign like Kerry's wife did.

God damn McCain Pisses me off. What they hell could she have rung up to total that much? Talk about compulsive and a shopaholic.

First off, that bearing has absolutely NOTHING to do with his politics. NOTHING. ZERO. NADA.

Second, she is worth tens of millions of dollars...that balance on a credit card is NOTHING to her.

Lots of people carry revolving balances they could otherwise pay off. An AMEX Platinum has no interest rate, only a annual fee, so she's not paying anything for the balance as long as she intended to keep the card anyway. Get it?

and these are the people handling your tax dollars

for a clod who has been bellowing about "big spenders" you seem to have changed your tune

No...perhaps you should increase your reading comprehension skills?

The spending habits of a Congressman's wife have nothing to do with how they handle national fiscal issues. At all. Ever. There is no correlation.

Oh really? If you can't manage your own finances, what makes you think you can manage someone elses?

Because the United States is not a "someone".

There is no similarity between someone managing their own finances and voting on legislation.

The Iraq War is driving us further and further into debt. We spend roughly 12 billion per month in Iraq. The price in both dollars and lives is no longer worth it.

For someone who claims to be a conservative, you are all over the map

These clowns can't manage their own finances - yet you have no problem with them managing our money we pay in taxes

So you want to surrender to the terrorists in Iraq to - I am not surprised. I expected as much
