JERUSALEM — A U.S. lawmaker introduced legislation Wednesday to strip former President Jimmy Carter's Georgia-based scholarly institution of taxpayer support because of Carter's plans to meet with the top leaders of the Palestinian terror group Hamas.

And a second lawmaker presented a non-binding resolution that would urge former presidents from "freelance diplomacy" in direct response to Carter's visit.

Carter is set to set to meet Thursday with Mahmoud Zahar, a top Hamas leader with control over militants in the Gaza Strip, and he met Tuesday with a high-ranked Hamas politician.

But the heaviest criticism for Carter is coming over a planned meeting on Friday with Hamas' exiled leader Khaled Meshal.

"America must speak with one voice against our terrorist enemies," Rep. Joe Knollenberg, R-Mich., said in a statement from his office. "It sends a fundamentally troubling message when an American dignitary is engaged in dialogue with terrorists. My legislation will make sure that taxpayer dollars are not being used to support discussions or negotiations with terrorist groups."

Knollenberg said the Carter Center has received about $19 million in taxpayer funds since 2001. He named his bill the Coordinated American Response to Extreme Radicals Act — or CARTER Act, for short. The Carter Center is housed at Emory University in Atlanta.

What's to say about Carter that hasn't been said already? At this point, his meeting with the head of known terrorist organization doesn't surprise me in the least. The guy's a meddling do-gooder who's 4 years in office PROVED he can't differentiate between his ideal socialist utopia and reality.

Was I Bush, I wouldn't let him go. Wonder how good a hostage a former US President makes, even if it IS "him".

How would bankrupting the library keep jimmy carter, an old, old man looking to jazz up his parting historic jab at life, from making a very Rocky Balboa attempt at isreali peace in the mid east?

It won't, but it make Congress look and feel like they're doing something about it.

Should have introduced some legislation calling for his indictment for aiding terrorist organizations.

I wonder if the same thing were being said the LAST time he was out brokering peace for israel.

Not against the law to talk to other countries, but it is against the law to assist terrorist organizations. Since Hamas is a terrorist organization and they have been bragging about how Jimmy C is going to help them, should be a slam dunk case.

if only the nomenclature were as universal as you'd think it should be.

"Gaddafi and Bush do apparently see eye to eye. On Monday, Gaddafi accomplished one of history's great diplomatic turnarounds when Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice announced that the U.S. was restoring full diplomatic relations with Libya and held up the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya as "a model" for others to follow. Rice attributed the ending of the U.S.'s long break in diplomatic relations to Gaddafi's historic decision in 2003 to dismantle weapons of mass destruction and renounce terrorism as well as Libya's "excellent cooperation in response to common global threats faced by the civilized world since September 11, 2001."

Don't you know that Hamas won a large majority in the Palestinian parliament in 2006? Despite opposition efforts that ousted them, they have popular support. You cannot acheive a diplomatic solution in the region without them.

As Doeton points out, Bush negotiates with Gaddafi. That has achieved what might be Bush's only success, however limited. Though Libya has never admitted carrying out the 1988 bombing of Flight 103, it "accepted responsibility for the actions of its officials" in connection with the murder of 259 people, including 180 Americans.

Why is Condi Rice sitting down with these terrorists? Unlike Carter, she has official status.

Jimmy is that rare bird, a moral man who tries to find the right thing. This is, as far as I can tell still America and we still honor freedom of speech and a tolerance of new ideas. Taking away funding is a childish and silly thing to do as it affects others. But I say, bravo Jimmy, keep up the good fight.

"Then, pointing to the “strong emphasis on evangelism” within both Christianity and Islam, he said, “I don’t have a problem with competition, provided Christians go by the Bible and don’t enter into pre-emptive wars.”

Taking an implicit swipe at the Bush administration, Carter talked about his handling of the Iranian hostage crisis.

“I could’ve destroyed Iran, but I decided to use negotiation,” he said. “We never dropped a bomb or shot a bullet, so we preserved the integrity of our country.”"

This true...but he did try. Sadly, the attempt crashed and burned in the desert.

Jimmy can do what Jimmy wants to do whether I like it or not. But he can do it on his own dime. If he is using taxpayer funds then I have no problem stripping him of it.

And as a result, the Muslim world came to think of Americans as pussies and launched a series of terrorist attacks that culminated in 9/11. Bravo for President Carter, what a humanitarian. Too bad he doesn't give a shit about the people he was paid to represent.

The Jews in Israel know Carter is an anti-semitic asshole...I wonder if the Jews in the US will have the guts to admit it.....

Just goes to show what the Palestians want ... they voted for a terrorist organization to represent them. That kind of solves the diplomatic solution problem.

Gaddafi announced he would no longer support terrorism and/or terrorist organizations in the media a requested a dialogue. Since his support for terrorism was the reason he was "blacklisted" it only makes sense that once he renounced it, diplomatic relations would resume.

Not even a good try.
