Ball, 27, ran from the scene and was apprehended the following morning by the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force and state police after being found at his sister's home in Northumberland County following an overnight manhunt. He was initially charged with malicious wounding, using a firearm to commit a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

A multi-jurisdictional grand jury handed down a true bill Wednesday morning that reads: "He did unlawfully and feloniously, willfully, deliberately and with premeditation, kill and murder Special Agent Michael T. Walter, a law enforcement officer of the Virginia State Police, for the purpose of interfering with the performance of his official duties." If Ball is convicted of capital murder, he could face life in prison or death.

June 14, 2017 - A man was sentenced to 15 months in prison Friday for threatening on Facebook to blow up the funeral of a slain Detroit police sergeant.
Deshawn Maurice Lanton, 21, of Detroit, pleaded guilty to conveying false information and hoaxes, according to the office of Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel L. Lemisch. Lanton posted the threat on a livestream video of Sgt. Kenneth Steil's September funeral that was on the Facebook page of WXYZ (Channel 7), authorities said. "During the funeral procession at St. Joan of Arc Church in St. Clair Shores, Lanton wrote 'Maybe I should drop a bomb on that building to get rid of the rest of y'all' on the Facebook live page as hundreds of officers marched into the church to pay their respects to the fallen officer," reads a press release from Lemisch's office.

NYPD officer assassinated in police vehicle
July 5, 2017 | The police officer who was shot in the head while sitting in a police vehicle in the Bronx early Wednesday has died according to law enforcement sources. The officer has been identified as 48-year-old Miosotis Familia.
A suspect came up and blasted Familia through the window without warning, sources said. “It was an attempted cop assassination,” one law enforcement source told The Post. The gunman approached at 12:30 a.m. as Familia sat inside a temporary headquarters vehicle at East 183rd Street and Morris Avenue in Fordham Heights, according to sources. Familia — a 12-year-veteran who is with the Anti-Crime unit of the 46th Precinct — was rushed to St. Barnabus Hospital, where she was undergoing surgery but could not be saved. “This is absolutely an unprovoked attack,” said NYPD Commissioner James P. O’Neill.

Police officers are seen at the scene of a police officer shooting on 183rd St. in The Bronx.

The commissioner said the suspect fired one round, after which the shot officer’s partner called for backup. Two other officers confronted the attacker about a block away, and shot him dead, police said. A bystander wound up being shot in the stomach, and was in stable condition at St. Barnabas. A silver revolver was found near the dead suspect. Cops rushing to the scene were warned by radio to keep their patrol vehicle windows closed while responding. At least five evidence cups covered spent rounds coulalong Morris Avenue between 183rd and 184th streets.

Witness Jay Marzelli, 17, at first thought all the gunshot was fireworks. “I was in this bodega right here on Crescent, just getting a sandwich and all of a sudden there was all this running and stuff going on and I look out probably 40,50, 60 cops screaming, “Call a paramedic, clear the block!’” “It looked like there was a riot going on… two seconds later I hear gunshots: bam, bam…. and then the police officer was just laying there in front of the stationary precinct – right here on Crescent and [E 183. “I saw an officer laying there in the ground unconscious in another officers arms. Police officers screaming: ‘Get the f—ing paramedics.’” “It was crazy — just insane. There were police officers everywhere.”

The shooting recalled the assassination of two uniformed officers as they sat in their marked police car on a street in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn in December, 2014. Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos — both posthumously promoted to detective — were targeted for their uniforms, officials said at the time. That shooter, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, 28, had posted anti-police threats on his Instagram hours three hours before opening fire into the two officers’ vehicle. Brinsley fled into a nearby subway, and shot himself to death on a platform as cops closed in.

A female NYPD officer died after being shot in the face Wednesday morning in the Bronx while sitting in her marked police vehicle with her partner, according to multiple media reports. “Based on what we know now, it is clear that this was an unprovoked direct attack on police officers who were assigned to keep the people of this city safe,” Police Commissioner James O’Neill said at a news conference shortly after the shooting.

A man walked up the police vehicle at 183rd Street and Morris Avenue about 12:30 a.m. and fired one shot from a handgun, hitting the 12-year veteran, O’Neill said. Her partner radioed for help, he said. The fleeing man encountered a uniformed police sergeant and a uniformed officer about a block away and the man drew a revolver, O’Neill said. “The officers fired at him, striking and killing him,” the commissioner said. “A silver revolver was recovered at the scene.”

A bystander was hospitalized in stable condition after being struck by a bullet during the encounter with the suspect, O’Neill said. The police commissioner spoke at a news conference at St. Barnabas Hospital with Mayor Bill de Blasio. The mayor said he and the commissioner met with the officer’s family. The NYPD identified the deceased suspect as Alexander Bonds, 34, of East 53rd Street in Manhattan.

I see. Now deaths only count if someone else targets the deceased.

Hookers. They have a far more dangerous job. I doubt you would claim they are not targeted. When they are murdered, you don't see a multi state manhunt to find the killer.

Cab drivers are targeted. As are clerks in stores.

Correctional Officer Joe William Heddy, Jr.

Using the argument that all the folks in public safety are targeted, one wonders how the enemy of the police managed to clog Correctional Oficer Joe Heddy's arteries like that. I know, a secret program from the enemy of police and law and all of that to convince them to eat bad food. Yes, that's it. It's all a big conspiracy.

In all honesty, I am sorry that Joe Heddy died. I don't want to see anyone die. Life is too precious, for everyone, to write it off so casually. I could take the mirror image of the cop lovers and argue that Joe did it to himself and there is no one to blame but him. I could be callous and asinine.

Missouri Joins 27 Other States With 'Blue Alert'
July 7, 2017 - Missouri soon will have a system to notify the general public when a law enforcement officer is killed or injured.
Patterned after the Amber Alert system for missing children, the so-called "Blue Alert" law was signed Thursday by Gov. Eric Greitens, who had championed the idea. The measure was part of a package of crime-related changes to state law approved by members of the House and Senate in May. In addition to the Blue Alert plan, the new law creates the crime of illegal re-entry. Those who are deported from the United States for committing a crime and then return and commit a felony would also be guilty of illegal re-entry in Missouri. The offense would be a class C felony, punishable by three to seven years.

Missouri soon will have a system to notify the general public when a law enforcement officer is killed or injured.

The measure also adds museums that cater to children under 18 to the list of public places where sex offenders are banned. The Blue Alert provisions are designed to promote public safety and protect police officers. When the law goes into effect, Missouri will be the 28th state to adopt such a program, according to U.S. Department of Justice figures. The measure also enhances penalties for assaults on law enforcement officers. "We must stand up for those who stand guard for us," Greitens said in a release.

Greitens signed the measure at a St. Louis County police site in Pagedale. Among those who were there to witness it were Ballwin Officer Michael Flamion and St. Louis Officer Tom Lake, who were both badly wounded in on-duty shootings. The changes come partially in response to the unrest in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown by Ferguson police Officer Darren Wilson in 2014. The legislation is Senate Bill 34.

Dallas Officers Memorialized One Year Later
July 10, 2017 - Slain Dallas Police Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Patrick Zamarripa, and Brent Thompson, an officer for Dallas Area Rapid Transit, were the focus of an outpouring of sorrow and gratitude on the anniversary of the July 7 ambush.
Commemorations for those who gave their lives and saved lives one year ago in downtown Dallas took place Friday with several ceremonies honoring police. Slain Dallas Police Officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael Smith and Patrick Zamarripa, and Brent Thompson, an officer for Dallas Area Rapid Transit, were the focus of an outpouring of sorrow and gratitude on the first anniversary of the July 7 ambush. Faith Forward Dallas, a coalition of local faith leaders, began the day’s events with a prayer service at Thanks-Giving Square. In attendance were Dallas police officers, elected officials and Odell Edwards, father of Jordan Edwards, who was killed by a Balch Springs police officer earlier this year.

Imam Omar Suleiman, a bilingual professor of Islamic Studies at Southern Methodist University, opened the event by calling to mind why protesters had gathered last July 7 after the deaths of Philando Castile in Minnesota and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, La. “When someone becomes violent and decides that it’s their right to take the life of someone else, it doesn’t matter what faith they profess or claim to profess at that point. It doesn’t matter what skin color they have. It doesn’t matter what they’re wearing. At that point, we stand against them, and we stand with their victims,” Suleman said. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins reflected on seeing “grace under fire” as officers ushered him safely into City Hall as shots rang out. “The actions of one lone assailant brought two diametrically opposed forces — peaceful protest and violence — together in one instant,” Jenkins said. “Still, in this terrible moment, we saw such grace.”

A Dallas police Sergeant wears a black ribbon across her badge during a day of remembrance for last year's police ambush organized by Faith Forward Dallas at Thanks-Giving Square in Dallas on Friday, July 7, 2017.

Dallas Police Sgt. Dan Mosher then took the microphone to say a prayer. “We thank you so much that you created us equal but different and that we are all one people on this earth,” Mosher said. “I pray that as we move forward, we would celebrate our differences and learn to love one another.” He then hugged Odell Edwards, Jordan’s father. El Centro College hosted a ceremony focused on renewal at the Student Center downtown, near where the shooting started a year ago. The shooter, Micah X. Johnson, gunned officers down just outside and inside the campus. Johnson holed up in a second-floor hallway where police tried for hours to negotiate with him before sending in a bomb-wielding robot that killed him.

Council member Adam McGough, a program coordinator at the college, said he didn’t have a class that day. He didn’t realize Johnson was in the El Centro building until he had gotten downtown for the first news conference. “I think about it a lot … it’s something that we live and relive every time we walk these streets,” McGough said. The college unveiled a student-made art installation Friday. Paper tree branches decorated a room in the student center and appeared between photos of police officers from that day. Photos were also projected on a white, miniature forest at the front of the room.

Officials say that a 16-year-old boy has confessed to fatally shooting a Newport, Arkansas police officer last month. An arrest affidavit filed Wednesday in Jackson County Circuit Court states that Derrick Heard told police that he fired the shot that killed Lt. Patrick Weatherford and opened fire on Sgt. Shane Rogers on June 13, according to The Arkansas Democrat and Gazette.

Tyler Calamese, 18, was previously arrested and Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce said he first considered filing capital-murder charges against him. He now faces charges of breaking or entering, theft and providing a weapon to a minor. "From the beginning, Heard was a suspect," Boyce told reporters. "We never ruled him out. We developed leads after questioning witnesses."

Widow of Officer Gives Birth to His Baby Girl
July 26, 2017 - The widow of slain NYPD Det. First Grade Wenjian Liu gave birth early Tuesday in Manhattan to a baby girl conceived from sperm retrieved in the hours after he was fatally shot almost three years ago
The widow of slain NYPD Det. First Grade Wenjian Liu gave birth early Tuesday in Manhattan to a baby girl conceived from sperm retrieved in the hours after he was fatally shot almost three years ago, the NYPD said. Pei Xia Chen delivered baby Angelina, called “Angel” for short, early Tuesday at New York-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center Hospital on the Upper East Side, the NYPD said. Liu, 32, and his partner, Rafael Ramos, 40, were assassinated as they sat in a police car in Brooklyn on Dec. 20, 2014. Both were shot by Ismaaiyl Abdullah Brinsley, 28, a Baltimore man who later committed suicide in a nearby subway station. “The past three years have been the most difficult,” said Liu’s mother, Xiu Yan Li, now a doting grandmother, as she spoke at her Brooklyn home Tuesday night. “This is the best news we’ve gotten. It feels like my son came back today. This is like God gave us a gift.”

Liu’s pregnancy had been top secret, with even the fallen cop’s parents kept in the dark until the baby was born. “She didn’t want to break her family’s hearts if it wasn’t successful,” said Susan Zhuang, 31, a family friend, adding that she jumped for joy when she heard the news while at work as chief of staff for state Assemb. William Colton (D-Brooklyn). Li said she was making a pot of sticky rice when her phone rang at about 10 a.m. Her daughter-in-law was calling to telling her she had a granddaughter. “There were gray clouds,” Li said of life since her son died. “And now the sun has finally come out.” Soon after the phone call, NYPD vehicles arrived at Li’s W. Sixth Street home, just as they did when Liu was killed. Except this time they were taking Li and her husband, Wei Tang Liu, to the hospital to live out a dream they thought died with their son — meeting little Angelina for the first time.

nypdbaby.5978d348f1a97.jpg

Pei Xia Chen, the wife of NYPD Officer Wenjian Liu, shot to death in 2014, has given birth to a baby girl.

At the hospital, both got to hold their new granddaughter, who weighed in at just under seven pounds. “It was like I was holding my own son,” Li said. Liu and his wife had only been married about three months and had plans to have children when he was killed, the NYPD said on its website. While the mortally wounded Liu was on life support, the NYPD said, Chen “requested that her husband’s semen be preserved” in a quest to one day have his child. An NYPD official said that Liu’s family had wanted word of the birth of Angelina to first be revealed in an internal department message to the rank and file of the NYPD. But news quickly spread based on information from members of an NYPD widows’ organization, the police official said. And the New York Post reported the story Tuesday afternoon on its website.

Chen, smiling while holding her newborn in photos distributed by the NYPD, predicted she was having a daughter from the beginning, according to an NYPD statement. “I got pregnant through the [in-vitro fertilization] procedure and I told my friend, ‘It’s going to be a baby girl.’ My friend said, ‘No, you haven’t even checked the sonograms,’ but I was right!” Back at home Tuesday night, Liu’s father, mostly sad and withdrawn since his son’s killing, took calls from wellwishers. Li beamed as a mound of roses and flower bouquets sat on a entry table. She fielded congratulations, including from an old friend from her native China who she spoke with on FaceTime. “Take care of your new daughter!” the friend said, prompting Li to laugh. The overjoyed grandmother said the family plans to take Angelina to Liu’s grave when she’s a month old. “This way I can tell him he has a daughter.”

Details Released in Slaying of Missouri Officer
August 8, 2017 - An audio recording of police dispatches gives insight to just how quickly the traffic stop escalated to the fatal shooting of Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael, as well as the desperate manhunt for his killer.
"Shots fired, officer hit," broke the silence on police radios seconds after Clinton, Mo., Police Officer Gary Michael pulled an SUV over Sunday evening. An audio recording of police dispatches gives insight to just how quickly the traffic stop escalated to the fatal shooting of Michael, as well as the desperate manhunt for his killer. Michael had stopped a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a registration violation about 10:45 p.m. Sunday. "I'll be on East Green right outside Henry County 911 Dispatch," an officer, presumably Michael, said calmly as he gave the phonetic alphabet for the license plate. "It'll be a dark gray in colored Dodge SUV. Unknown occupants." Ten seconds later came the word that shots had been fired and an officer had been hit.

Michael, who had been with the Clinton Police Department for less than a year, was fatally wounded. A manhunt was underway for his accused killer, Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton. The police dispatches from the Henry County Joint Communication Center were captured and archived by Broadcastify.com, an online source of police, fire and other public safety audio streams. Shortly after the shooting, a dispatcher asked Michael his status. After no response, she advised others that his vehicle was not moving and that it was still parked. In the frantic moments afterward, officers responded to the area as dispatchers alerted all county units of a dark-colored SUV seen fleeing from the area. An officer confirmed the shooting. "Shots fired, officer down, officer down," the officer said. "I repeat, officer down."

Flowers in memory of officer Gary Michael have been placed at the front door to the Clinton Police Department in Clinton, Missouri, Monday, August 7.

Shortly thereafter, a dispatcher said the vehicle had wrecked at 301 W. Green St. About the same time, an ambulance was dispatched to the 100 block of East Green where the officer was shot. "Get an ambulance here immediately -- immediately," an officer requested over the radio about 3 1/2 minutes after the traffic stop. The officer then requested dispatch to get a Life Flight helicopter ambulance on standby. Officers then advised that an armed man was seen running from the scene. "If there's any possible way we could get enough units to set up a perimeter," an officer asked dispatchers. "Again, we have the vehicle. Last known location (of the shooter was) east of us. He's headed back to the other officers."

An officer also asked for a police dog. At one point, an officer asked what type of firearm the shooter had. "Should be a long gun," another replied. "It went through the vest." Shortly thereafter, an officer said he found a .223 rifle casing. In the minutes that followed, police tried to get a description of the shooter. One person told officers he saw a man in a white T-shirt run behind his home. Another asked police to check a home's basement after the resident found an open door. No one was found inside. In the recording, an emergency worker was heard giving an update on Michael's condition. "This is going to be a GSW (gunshot wound) times two to the chest, and the patient is in cardiac arrest," a woman advised.

Suspect Charged With Murder in Death of Missouri Police Officer
August 7, 2017 - Henry County on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Ian McCarthy on charges of murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael.
Henry County on Monday issued an arrest warrant for Ian McCarthy on charges of murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of a Clinton police officer. A manhunt is underway after Officer Gary Michael, 37, was shot and killed during a traffic stop late Sunday. The Missouri Highway Patrol is looking for McCarthy, 39, of Clinton. Originally, he was called a person-of-interest in the fatal shooting, but now he is being called a suspect. It was his Dodge Nitro that was pulled over and later found wrecked near the shooting, said Sgt. Bill Lowe, a spokesman with the Missouri Highway Patrol. Michael had been with the police department for less than one year, Lowe said.

Michael is the first officer to die in the line of duty for the department, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. "He had always wanted to be a police officer," says Patrol Sgt Bill Lowe, but the opportunity just hadn't presented itself until later in his life. The search for the McCarthy began in a defined area. Twelve hours after the shooting, the search has moved out across the city limits and Henry County. The searchers are using a police dog. A helicopter used earlier in the search has stopped flying because of low cloud cover. Police are getting tips, the Highway Patrol reports.

Clinton Police Officer Gary Michael, 37, was fatally shot during a traffic stop Sunday night. Authorities are looking for his killer. Ian McCarthy, 39, of Clinton, has been named a suspect.

Michael had stopped a 2008 Dodge Nitro for a registration violation about 10:45 p.m. Sunday along near the intersection of East Green Street and North Second Street (Missouri 13). As Michael exited his patrol vehicle, McCarthy also got out of the Dodge Nitro and allegedly fired a shot at Michael, striking him, Lowe said. Michael returned fire, but it was unknown if McCarthy was hit. McCarthy fled the scene in the SUV and crashed about three blocks later. He then fled on foot. Michael was rushed to a hospital where he died from his injuries.

A manhunt was underway for the McCarthy. Originally, Lowe said they were trying to find McCarthy because his SUV was involved in the traffic stop. "We want to make sure we are diligent in finding where he is," Lowe said. "I'm sure he has information about this incident so we are currently still searching for him." About 8:30 a.m., the Missouri Highway Patrol said via Twitter that McCarthy is a suspect in the fatal shooting. Investigators found evidence that directly linked him to the crime, Lowe said. A "routine traffic stop" is a misnomer, Lowe said. Police officers are always mindful that something bad could happen.

Suspect in Slaying of Mo. Officer Captured
August 9, 2017 - Ian James McCarthy was apprehended about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday walking on a highway a mile south of Bucksaw Resort and Marina in Henry County.[
The hunt for a suspected cop killer is over. Ian James McCarthy of Clinton was apprehended about 6:15 p.m. Tuesday walking on a highway a mile south of Bucksaw Resort and Marina in Henry County. According to a spokesman for the Missouri State Highway Patrol, a driver spotted McCarthy on an area highway and reported the sighting to police. McCarthy was apprehended on Missouri Route U shortly thereafter without incident. "There is a tremendous amount of relief," said Highway Patrol Sgt. Bill Lowe. According to Lowe, McCarthy was taken to a Kansas City area hospital in stable condition.

Authorities had searched for McCarthy since he was charged Monday with first-degree murder in the death of Gary Michael, a Clinton police officer. Bucksaw Marina is about 18 miles from the scene of the shooting. Michael, 37, had been on the force less than a year. The Missouri Highway Patrol had been in Chilhowee, which is about 25 miles northwest of Clinton in Johnson County, Mo., since about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday on a tip that McCarthy was in a home there. "We're following up any leads," Lowe told reporters as the patrol surrounded the home. "Any lead we get is a good lead until we deem that it didn't work out."

A manhunt ensued moments after McCarthy allegedly shot Michael during a traffic stop Sunday around 10:45 p.m. McCarthy allegedly drove away but shortly after that crashed his SUV and fled on foot. He had not been seen again until his arrest Tuesday. Lowe said McCarthy was injured by gunfire when he was pulled over by Michael. The weapon he allegedly used to kill Michael was not found, Lowe said. "It was a senseless act," he said during a news conference Tuesday night to announced McCarthy's capture. "But we still have a weapon to locate."

On Monday, McCarthy's house showed severe damage from a law enforcement raid the night before. Broken windows and an open garage gave evidence to the force of the raid. The search continued as police checked a vacant school building a few blocks away from the shooting scene near downtown Clinton. A helicopter circled overhead. A memorial to the slain officer was erected outside the town library, near the scene of the shooting. It was the first line-of-duty death for Clinton, a town of about 9,000 people near Truman Lake.

Florida Police Officer Fatally Shot, Another Critically Wounded
August 19, 2017 - Kissimmee Police Officer Matthew Baxter was killed and Sgt. Sam Howard was in grave condition after both men were shot while responding to a call.
One officer was shot and killed and another was gravely injured Friday night in what the Kissimmee Police chief said might have been an ambush in McLaren Circle. Police Chief Jeff O’Dell reported Officer Matthew Baxter was killed and Sgt. Sam Howard was shot and is in grave condition. The uniformed officers were responding to a call at 9:30 p.m. in the area of Palmway and Cypress streets. “It breaks my heart to have to come speak to you tonight about another senseless tragedy,” O’Dell said. At least two people were taken into custody and police were searching for a third suspect. When asked about whether the officers were ambushed, O’Dell said it was too early to say, but it was “leading toward that.” He said both officers were husbands and fathers. “This is a tough time for each and every one of us,” O’Dell said.

Howard was a 10-year veteran of the department and Baxter had been with the Kissimmee department for three years. Osceola County Commissioner Fred Hawkins Jr. said he couldn’t believe the news. "It's just awful. We're praying for the families of these officers and for the whole KPD family," he said. The last officer killed on the job was in 1983 after being shot. Information about those in custody was not immediately provided.

Carlos Santiago, 37, was driving with his wife and daughter back from dinner on International Drive when they saw dozens of patrol cars speed past them on Orange Blossom Trail. "They were just flying," he said. "It was pretty obvious something bad had happened." The area where the shooting happened is in McLaren Circle. "It's fairly well known as not a great area. It's pretty run down compared to the rest of the city and it's known for having more crime," Santiago said. FHP said there was “heavy police activity” in the area and told people to avoid the area. There was also a large police presence at Roscoe’s late Friday. While the media waited for O'Dell to address the public in front of the emergency entrance at Osceola Regional Medical Center, two women were being escorted out of the building by two police officers. They were both crying and huddled before they saw the lights and cameras outside and dashed back into the building.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell speaks to the media after two officers were shot, one fatally, while responding to a call Friday night.

At least four Osceola deputies were stationed by the south entrance to the hospital, wearing body armor and carrying heavy guns, standing next to their patrol cars. Alexis Nieves, 27, was driving to see a friend when she got stopped at a red light on Orange Blossom Trail and U.S. Highway 192. She saw a few cop cars then dozens started arriving to the intersection. She looked to her left and saw an officer with a long gun, the she saw a person being loaded into an ambulance. There were helicopters circling the in the area. Emergency crews were doing CPR and trying to resuscitate the person. Nieves didn't know it was an officer who had been shot.[ "I just started crying," she said. "I didn't know what to think. It's so sad." Nieves said she saw said more than 80 law enforcement vehicles flooding the area, along with fire trucks and EMS vehicles. "I was in the middle of it all and couldn't believe what was happening," she said. "I called my friend in tears. I've never seen anything like that."

Messages of support flowed out from across the country. On its Twitter account, the Orlando Police Department said, “Please keep @kissimmeepolice in your prayers tonight.” The Orange County Sheriff’s Office also offered its own message of comfort, saying, “Our solidarity is with @kissimmeepolice as they deal with this tragic loss.” Kissimmee Police has 104 officers. O’Dell took over the department in August 2016. On Friday night, there was also a report from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office that two police officers had been shot on the Westside of Jacksonville. Two Pennsylvania Troopers were also reported shot late Friday. The shootings received nationwide attention, with President Donald Trump sending thoughts and prayers to the Kissimmee Police.

It has been a dangerous year for law enforcement in Central Florida. Lt. Debra Clayton, a 17-year veteran of the Orlando Police Department, was killed in a gunfight in the Wal-Mart parking lot while attempting to arrest Markeith Loyd, a suspect in the murder of his pregnant ex-girlfriend, Sade Dixon. Loyd was later captured after a nine-day manhunt. Orange County Sheriff's Deputy Norman Lewis, a motorcycle officer, was also killed that day during the pursuit for Loyd. Earlier reports Friday night from official sources indicated that two officers had died.

Second police officer shot in Kissimmee dies after Friday night shooting
August 19, 2017 - The second of two police officers shot Friday night in Kissimmee in Central Florida has died, the Kissimmee police department posted on Facebook Saturday afternoon. “It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Sergeant Richard “Sam” Howard. Sam succumbed to his injuries this afternoon,’’ the department said in its posting.
Howard, 36, and Officer Matthew Baxter, 27, were involved in a shootout that began around 9:30 p.m. Friday in Kissimmee when the officers checked out a trio of people in one of the city’s neighborhoods. Baxter began to scuffle with one, Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O’Dell told reporters Saturday morning. Howard, who arrived as a backup, became involved and both officers were struck by gunshots. Neither had time to return fire, O’Dell said. Baxter, a three-year veteran, died Friday night; Howard, a 10-year veteran, died on Saturday.

Kissimmee Police Chief Jeff O'Dell, left, holds a news conference Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017 in Kissimmee, Fla. A suspect in the fatal shooting of a police officer in Florida and the grave wounding of a sergeant was arrested several hours after the attack in a bar, authorities said Saturday. Everett Miller faces a charge of first-degree murder for the killing of Officer Matthew Baxter and could face other charges for the wounding of Sgt. Sam Howard, said O'Dell. Kissimmee is located south of the theme park hub of Orlando, Florida.

About an hour and a half later and 160 miles north on Friday night, two Jacksonville police officers were shot while responding to a call reporting a suicidal person on the city’s west side. When the suspect, later identified as Derrick Rashard Brabham, exited the house with a semi-automatic rifle, he traded gunfire with the police, the Jacksonville Times-Union reported. One officer was shot in the stomach, and another was shot in both hands. Brabham was declared dead after being taken to a nearby hospital. The officers, later identified as Michael Fox and Kevin Jarrell, were both in stable condition Saturday morning, according to the Times-Union.

About two hours after the shooting in Kissimmee, police arrested 45-year-old Everett Glenn Miller when he fled to a bar around 11:30 p.m. Miller, a Marine veteran who had been recently taken into custody by the Osecola County Sheriff’s Office over mental health concerns, was found with two guns, a 9mm and .22 revolver, the Orlando Sentinel reported. Miller was charged Saturday morning with resisting arrest and carrying a concealed weapon, according to Osecola County Jail records. An early investigation found that Miller had also threatened police officers online, O’Dell said. He added that his officers intended to use Baxter’s handcuffs on Miller when he is taken to the county jail, and that he expects Miller will also face a murder charge, according to the Sentinel.

Both officers were wearing body armor but no body cameras when they were struck. “They are both wonderful men, family men. They are both very committed to the community,” O’Dell said, according to the Sentinel. “They were the epitome of what you ask for in law enforcement officers.”
