Egypt has experienced a spate of deadly attacks since the army’s 2013 toppling of Islamist president Mohammad Mursi following massive street protests.
Authorities blamed the violence on Mursi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which is staunchly backed by Qatar.

“What you are doing will go unpunished,” Al Sissi said Saturday without naming Qatar. “Egypt will remain too resilient to bow to threats of terror and those who stand behind it. Egypt is strong with its army, police, thinkers and its entire people,” he added.

The inauguration of the base featured graduation of 10 batches from Egypt’s different military academies.

The new military base comes after two years of work by the Engineering Corps of the Armed Forces. It includes all buildings for all units positioned at the base, with a total of 1155 buildings and facilities.

The development and expansion work includes 72 km long of roads inside and outside the base, with the establishment of four main gates.

For combat training of the base they constructed 72 integrated fields that include a complex of specialized training fields and small arms shooting fields. They established an electronic tactical shooting range complex, using the latest shooting systems and emulators, and developed an upgraded marine landing platform in al-Ameed area within the base.

Officials said the Mohammed Naguib military base is the largest in the Middle East and is to protect facilities and projects in the coastal cities on the Mediterranean. The area is a major tourist destination and has seen a surge in acts of terror by suspected militants. Daesh, a terrorist group based in Iraq and Syria, which has established a branch in the nearby Sinai region since the 2013 ouster of Sisi’s predecessor Mohammed Morsi, has been behind many of the attacks in Egypt’s northwest. Smaller groups have also targeted tourists to harm Egypt’s revenues from the profitable industry.
