White House pressed Iraq biowarfare claim despite evidence to contrary.

On May 29, 2003, 50 days after the fall of Baghdad, President Bush proclaimed a fresh victory for his administration in Iraq: Two small trailers captured by U.S. troops had turned out to be long-sought mobile "biological laboratories." He declared, "We have found the weapons of mass destruction."

The claim, repeated by top administration officials for months afterward, was hailed at the time as a vindication of the decision to go to war. But even as Bush spoke, U.S. intelligence officials possessed powerful evidence that it was not true.

A secret fact-finding mission to Iraq -- not made public until now -- had already concluded that the trailers had nothing to do with biological weapons. Leaders of the Pentagon-sponsored mission transmitted their unanimous findings to Washington in a field report on May 27, 2003, two days before the president's statement.

Report shelved while claim went forth

The three-page field report and a 122-page final report three weeks later were stamped "secret" and shelved. Meanwhile, for nearly a year, administration and intelligence officials continued to publicly assert that the trailers were weapons factories.

The authors of the reports were nine U.S. and British civilian experts -- scientists and engineers with extensive experience in all the technical fields involved in making bioweapons -- who were dispatched to Baghdad by the Defense Intelligence Agency for an analysis of the trailers. Their actions and findings were described to a Washington Post reporter in interviews with six government officials and weapons experts who participated in the mission or had direct knowledge of it.

None would consent to being identified by name because of fear that their jobs would be jeopardized. Their accounts were verified by other current and former government officials knowledgeable about the mission. The contents of the final report, "Final Technical Engineering Exploitation Report on Iraqi Suspected Biological Weapons-Associated Trailers," remains classified. But interviews reveal that the technical team was unequivocal in its conclusion that the trailers were not intended to manufacture biological weapons. Those interviewed took care not to discuss the classified portions of their work.

"There was no connection to anything biological," said one expert who studied the trailers. Another recalled an epithet that came to be associated with the trailers: "the biggest sand toilets in the world."

Old old news and by the way, that is NOT what Bush actually said...go find the original quote and we'll go from there.

Must you bother him with details and fact-checking?

Why should he start now?

In truth, I suspect that DF is one of those who never wears a seat belt...it is obvious that the aliens find it very easy to suck him out of the car and into their spaceship. I can also understand why they return him.

Question: But, still, those countries who didn't support the Iraqi Freedom operation use the same argument, weapons of mass destruction haven't been found. So what argument will you use now to justify this war?

THE PRESIDENT: "We found the weapons of mass destruction. We found biological laboratories. You remember when Colin Powell stood up in front of the world, and he said,

Iraq has got laboratories, mobile labs to build biological weapons.

They're illegal. They're against the United Nations resolutions, and we've so far discovered two. And we'll find more weapons as time goes on. But for those who say we haven't found the banned manufacturing devices or banned weapons, they're wrong, we found them."

Why does anyone have to justify the war to you?

Then engage in something that might be productive-or even interesting for that matter.

So dissension against an idiot mistake by the present president isn’t allowed?

And BTW - what happened to this comment?:

(can't even keep up with a 75 year-old. now that's just plain sad)

Here is Justification for the war:

1. After 10, TEN fucking years of patrolling the no-fly zone which Saddam violated on a weekly basis by lighting up our birds with radar (which would instantly get bombed), we decided enough is enough.

2. He was continually playing a cat and mouse game with U.N. weapons inspectors. We didn't know if he had WMD or not. Our intelligence (as well as our allies') thought he did have them. The fact that we never found them, doesn't mean they were never there (Hello, Syria?). Even if they never did exist, doesn't detract from the fact that Saddam lead us to believe he had them with his cat and mouse games with inspectors.

3. Saddam is an asshole. He butchered his own people, invaded a country that ended up leading us to war, and tried to assassinate one of our ex-Presidents.

Those were enough reasons for me. I don't give a shit if they aren't good enough for you.

Again - showed where your president made the exact statement and yet got no response. Odd that. ;)

Looking for WMD. Here is proof. Maybe not on a large scale, but it does prove that they were in Iraq. If they aren't in Iraq now, then it worries me where they might have ended up. Iran maybe?

Oh no--not the old "dissension" argument. Dissent away all you like and quit acting like someone is trying to shut you up. It's called "rebuttal". I was just hoping for something more creative than "justify the war". Why don't you just tell us what you are really trying to accomplish.
