Earlier today we had a Republican Committee panel at school. Basically we had some political people in the area come in and tell us about how we could get involved if we dont want run for office. One of them happened to know alot of representatives in Washington and was trying to tell us that people need to be civil in politics.
He first began by pointing to the 80s. Here you had people who sharply disagreed. Yet they did it civilly. Reagan and His opponents could tolerate each other. They treated each other with respect for the most part.
Anyway then he gave us an example of a recent occurance. Apparently, a republican representative went to Tom Delay (back when he was still in charge) and asked him if they could have take a minute to wish a Happy Birthday to one of their well respected colleagues. (Not sure which party but im assuming Republican as well) Nice thing to do right? Anyway Mr. Delay said it was alright but asked him if he "was sure he really wanted to do it." Naturally the representative replied he did so he then had to go ask Ms. Pelosi whether she would allow it.
Can you guess what she said? She said there was no way that they were going to sing happy birthday to him. (Hence why im guessing he was a Republican.) Apparently singing happy birthday to a fellow politician would look like they are giving into the other party on CSPAN. We can't possibly have that.
