NYT: U.S.-S. Korean War Drills Begin

The United States and South Korea on Sunday kicked off their largest joint war game in years, with a nuclear-powered American aircraft carrier prowling off the east coast of South Korea while North Korea threatened to retaliate with its nuclear weapons and reportedly put its military on an alert for war.

Rising tensions demonstrated how tenuous peace remained on the divided peninsula after the Korean War was temporarily halted in a ceasefire between the U.S.-led United Nations forces and the communist troops from North Korea and China 57 years ago on Tuesday.

The current spate of tension was sparked when a South Korean warship was blown up in March, killing 46 sailors. A team of investigators from South Korea, the United States and other countries that joined the U.N. forces during the war determined in May that North Korea torpedoed the ship.

All I can say is...

I find it interesting that Obama hasn't apologized in advance. Perhaps his testicles finally dropped.

July 9 (some three months after sinking of ship) "The United Nations Security Council on Friday unanimously condemned the sinking of a South Korean warship more than three months after the event, but its statement did not name North Korea as the aggressor. However, Susan Rice, US envoy to the United Nations who introduced the statement, said its meaning was “crystal clear”. “Our view is that the message to North Korea is quite clear,” she said after the Council session. “This statement is notable. It uses the term ‘attack’ that is not a neutral term.”

Yea, lets go in. Whose kids are we going to use, yours? Poor kids are already fighting your wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I would be one of the ones they would likely send, if it came to war.

We're not poor, nor are we children.

2.Members of the all-volunteer military are sig*nificantly more likely to come from high-income neighborhoods than from low-income neighborhoods. Only 11 percent of enlisted recruits in 2007 came from the poorest one-fifth (quintile) of neighborhoods, while 25 per*cent came from the wealthiest quintile. These trends are even more pronounced in the Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) pro*gram, in which 40 percent of enrollees come from the wealthiest neighborhoods—a number that has increased substantially over the past four years.
3.American soldiers are more educated than their peers. A little more than 1 percent of enlisted per*sonnel lack a high school degree, compared to 21 percent of men 18–24 years old, and 95 percent of officer accessions have at least a bachelor’s degree

The North Koreans are already pushing hard at seeing how much they can get away with. They are sending floating anti personnel mines downstream, and a couple fishermen got killed by one yesterday.

A man died and another was injured in an explosion in a restricted area in Yeoncheon near the border with North Korea, possibly from a wooden box land mine, police said Sunday.

The explosion occurred around 11:20 p.m. on Saturday in a border city 60 kilometers northeast of Seoul. A 48-year-old man, known only by his last name Han, died at the scene, while a 25-year-old man with the last name Kim was taken to a hospital with injuries.

Police said that the two were carrying what appears to be a boxed landmine that they picked up on their way back from fishing at the Injin River. The area where they were fishing is off limits to civilians.

Police and military officials say that they are investigating the exact cause of the accident and how the men were able to gain entrance to the area.

It has yet to be confirmed whether the explosive drifted down waters from North Korea. On Saturday, military officials issued warnings to locals to take extra caution after authorities discovered eight wooden box landmines, which they said probably floated south from North Korea.

Dear Leader is thinking he can get away with it. He is probably trying to provoke some retaliation so they can restart the war.

don't worry, in a few months the UN will pass a resolution condeming the death of fishermen. That will show N Korea.

We are not likely to attack North Korea. North Korea has amassed a huge artillery force just north of Seoul. They can level the city in a couple hours. Neither the US or South Korea can do anything about that. And South Korea can not evacuate the city has the North can see them trying to do so.

Not to mention North Korea would be totally razed to the ground in the South Korean, Japanese and US counter-attack or nuked before it could fire its nukes.

Yesssiree.
Put a whippin on them just like you did the Taliban. Epic fail.:eusa_whistle:
It makes no difference that they have ships, subs, planes, artillery and all of that crap.
You're murka !

North Korea isn't going to attack, neither. The North cannot sustain a long-term engagement. It is beyond their capability. What they hope to do, as you point out, is to devastate Seoul quickly and force the UN into a quickly negotiated settlement. Otherwise, if it doesn't end quickly, then the North's goose is cooked.

The South has the capability, the will and the means to defeat the North.

I served two tours in the ROK. At times, I thought we were there not to defend the North from attacking the South but the other way around.

Done the numbers yet NK's military is shit compared to SK's (SK's military outnumbers NK in the millions), while at the same time understanding that these are South Koreans and not all Americans.

Plus if Seoul was hit and many millions of South Koreans were killed then South Koreans would accept nothing other than the total defeat of North Korea, and even if the US had to nuke NK both Japan and SK would give the seal of approval.:cuckoo:

Fortunately for us a new full scale war will never happen, as the North Koreans don't want to destroy the fairytale regime they have developed.

ROK takes civil defense very seriously. There are regular drills.

ANd while there may be lots of artillery, the ROK has lots of aircraft to engage in counterbattery fire.

The Norks have too much on their plate right now to start anything serious. Most of the military is for civilian population control. There isn't any left over to fight anybody but the North Korean people..

The North can cause some damage. But they are unable to economically support a war. They could never occupy the South, they would run out of everything logistically.

Even in the Korean War they needed Soviet Airpower and Chinese troops to save their asses. Right now they have neither

North Korea's military outnumbers South Korea's military 5:1, and has nearly double the amount of hardware.

South Korea's military, however, is top-of-the-line, with high-tech equipment that easily rivals our own. North Korea is still using Soviet-era junk.
