At dusk Kabul traffic is complicated. The beggars and street kids are out in force, taking full advantage of long lines of cars waiting for some unpredictable event that will set the whole street in motion. Movement, when it does happen comes in fits and starts.

Young boys in dust soaked clothes work up and down lines of cars, wiping windows and mirrors with scraps of cloth.* They stand on the running boards of trucks clutching mirrors and door handles wiping cloudy windows and peering inside.* They are as dirty as the trucks they try to clean, with big eyes and tiny hands that “tap, tap tap” on your window.* The boys are smart; they don’t bother with taxis or local cars. Instead they focus on anything which looks like it might hold a foreigner.
