HOOD RIVER COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -
The Vancouver boy responsible for igniting the Eagle Creek Fire in the Columbia River Gorge in September must pay more than $36.6 million in restitution.

Judge John A. Olson issued his opinion Monday, ordering the boy, who was 15 when he tossed fireworks while hiking last year, to pay $36,618,330.24 for his actions which sparked the Eagle Creek Fire.

The judge’s decision was announced four days after the teen’s attorney appeared in court, and called the amount of restitution sought “absurd.”

The state submitted 11 restitution claims from various parties, including the Oregon Department of Transportation and US Forest Service, as well as some of the victims who suffered property damage in the fire.

Olson declined two of the claims, finding they did not qualify for restitution. For the other nine claims, Olson wrote in his opinion that he was “satisfied that the restitution ordered in this case bears a sufficient relationship to the gravity of the offenses for which the youth was adjudicated.”

The boy pleaded guilty to 12 counts in February, including reckless burning on public land and criminal mischief. He apologized in court in February and was sentenced to five years probation and 1,920 hours of community service with the Forest Service.

Won't replace the damage the little bastard created, but it serves notice to others that they won't get off free for such actions.

No, of course not. But everything that he ever makes above a bare subsistance is subject to seizure for repayment of the debt.

If they start holding people accountable for starting fires when they catch them, maybe there would be less incidents of fires.

I know that here in Amarillo, when the fire danger is high, they break into programming with that little banner and beeping noise, as well as warn us about it on the local weather reports.

I agree, but I see he only has to do 1900 hours of community service. That little shit should be an indentured servant till he is 50 years old.

The kid reached in his pocket and paid the $.24 cents in court and then went to his paper route to get the rest.

It brings up an interesting point though, he's obviously responsible for the damage but how to get restitution. Even from an adult it would be impossible other than jail time.

You know what this kids community service should be? Spending the summer working on a forest fire crew until he meets his required number of hours.

Jail time doesn't work either. Indentured servitude does.

If the kid had to work on forest fires during his summer break, then maybe he would understand why you have to be careful when you're in the forest.

Nope. he should be required to do every shit job that no one else wants to do. He should be digging ditches for the firefighters, he should be doing every back breaking, miserable job that there is to pay society back.

I was a Hot Shot for two years. You have no idea what I know.
