Federal authorities said Wednesday they plan to sue an Arizona county sheriff and his office over allegations of civil rights violations, including the racial profiling of Hispanics.
The U.S. Justice Department has been seeking an agreement requiring sheriff Joe Arpaio office to train officers in how to make constitutional traffic stops, collect data on people arrested in traffic stops and reach out to Hispanics to assure them that the department is there to also protect them.
Arpaio has denied the racial profiling allegations and has claimed that allowing a court monitor would mean that every policy decision would have to be cleared through an observer and would nullify his authority.
DOJ officials told a lawyer for Arpaio on April 3 that the lawman's refusal of a court-appointed monitor was a deal-breaker that would end settlement negotiations and result in a federal lawsuit.
The "notice of intent to file civil action" came Wednesday from Assistant U.S. Attorney General Thomas Perez in a letter to an Arpaio lawyer.

Dang they're playing the whole deck

Wonder if the DOJ is gonna pony up the Fast and Furious stuff?? Are they in the process of suing the New Black Panther party for putting a bounty on Zimmerman's head??

Wow, you'd think they'd have better things to do that sue a sheriff that's doing the job they are supposed to be handling.

obama will not carry Arizona. He's got several lawsuits against the state and is depleting the state treasury.

The reason for the lawsuit against Joe Arpaio is because Brian Terry was murdered in Arpaio's district and he has been very active in exposing Fast and Furious.

I live in Maricopa County, Arizona. Sheriff Joe did this to himself. His department is the one that rounded up AMerican citizens, held them for hours or days as "illegals", then had to pay out millions in lost lawsuits. He failed to enforce the state's employer sanction law, never even spent the millions the state gave him for enforcement of the law, while conducting "sweeps" that netted few illegals.

I love living here it's fun to watch the craziness.

So we have the Nation of Islam threatening the life of the President, and the Department of Justice focuses on this?

I seriously hate bureaucracy. Today especially.

Arpaio has never failed to win an election so he has to be doing something right for the majority. We know liberals don't like him. THIS action has more to do with the cooperation and investigation into the Terry murder than sweeps.

Holder better hurry. The new AG will drop that case in a heartbeat. Obama's adminstration really has taken harassment of US citizens to a whole new level.

You don't know what you're talking about. Terry was killed in Santa Cruz county. Arpiao is sheriff of Maricopa County.

Sheriff Joe didn't do crap about fast and furious, other then help the feds.

People here blame Arpiao for the hundreds of millions paid out in lawsuits. We just paid out $770,000 to a police officer Arpiao arrested for leaving his K-9 dog in his patrol car, during the summer heat. The dog died, Arpiao arrested, the cop sued, Arpiao lost and we paid.

You do know that the Bush Administration started the racial profiling investigation into Arpiao?

When did the Nation of Islam threaten the life of the President?
