CDZ Just what do you expect out of Cops?

Very little.

I at least expect them to follow the law and attempt to enforce it. Every interaction I have ever had with the police has let me down in that regard.

In all my years, I met one bad cop. That was when I was 17 years old. Other than that, I have lived in towns where there are no cops..just sheriffs. And every one of them were good ones. Lucky me.

I think of the job of police officer as a profession, not a trade or hobby. Thus, of cops I expect:
  • Markedly higher and routinely exhibited levels of integrity than is typical of the "average" adult individual
  • Greater aptitude for and unfailing (while on the job or acting in a law enforcement role even when off duty) rigorous exercise of sound judgment
  • In depth, though not clinical-grade, knowledge of human psychology
  • In depth, though not attorney-grade, knowledge of the law
  • An inquiring mind
Anything less than that is, at most, what I expect of a "night watchman," not a sworn officer of the law.
