Jon Stewart on the Bush Tax Cuts

Yea raise taxes on everyone making over $6K a year! Great move! That will help the economy and unemployment.

Word to stupid, the Daily Show is a fake news show. He is a comedian and a damn good one. If you take it seriously, like most liberals do (the prime reason liberal news stations and radio shows do so poorly, is because liberals don't watch the news and rather get their news from the Daily Show and Colbert Report), they your an idiot!

If Republicans are so worried about the deficit monster, why extend the Bush Tax Cuts? Unless they never cared about the deficit in the first place and won't once they get into office this fall. :eusa_think:

There are two ways to create a deficit and two ways to reduce one.

You create one by overspending and undercollecting.

Reduce one one by controlling spending and overcollecting.

Since both Republicans and Democrats overspend by definition, they are after all, political parties, they both overspend. Today's Republicans are just Democrat light.

That said, a conservative aproach to controlling shortfalls in the budget projects a reasonable estimate of income then creates budgeted expenditures to match that income.

Intentionally spending 2 Trillion dollars more than the budgeted outlays which were already in deficit on wish list items is just plain insane. That is what the current adminstration has done. One trillion is gone and the other is about to be gone. Shortly after that, the republic will also be gone.

Will taking another 5% of the income out of the hands of the citizens and giving it to the thieves in Washington help or hurt tax revenue?

Well, examine the impact of the Failed Stimulus for a hint.

Jon Stewart Exposes the Financial Idiocy of Sarah Palin, John Boehner, and Other Republicans

Tonight, a freshly-shaved Jon Stewart talked about the fact that Republicans are simultaneously complaining about the nation's deficit and fighting to extend Bush's tax cuts (which, if ended, would reduce said deficit by 30%). Inside, video of the smackdown.

Video after the jump.

It's funny because it's true. Stewarts writers did not put the words shown in those clips into the mouths of our right leaning leaders. They said what they said on their own.

Stewart also did not make up the FACT that the tax cuts expiring will still keep rates below what they were under Reagan.

We shouldn't be raising taxes in this recession, but its pretty hilarious that the Rs are saying we need to cut taxes on one hand and reduce the deficit on the other. Its funnier that some people think this is perfectly consistent.

you dont think they want to cut spending?

Well, then why don't they tell us what they are going to cut?

Oh, sure, they'll talk about cutting "waste" and government employees, but that's not serious. Total expenditure of US government operations is $22 billion, which sounds like a lot of money, but that is 0.6% of total government spending, and 1.5% of the deficit. You could fire every single government employee and shut down every government agency and building, and you'd still have 98.5% of the budget deficit remaining. As for waste, they don't ever give any sort of numbers. Its always easy to point to the ubiquitous "waste" but again, they can never give any concrete numbers other than some symbolic Bridge to Nowhere, which again, is a mere rounding error or a rounding error in the budget.

If you really want to cut spending in the country, you have to cut defense, social security, medicare and welfare. If you cut all welfare, you'd still have nearly a trillion dollar deficit. Even if you cut "everything else" there still would be a massive deficit. Yet Republicans don't tell us how much medicare or social security or defense or even welfare they are going to cut.

Why would they?

They have gotten elected many times through history by simply paying lip service to the idea of cutting spending during elections.

No one's cutting SHIT.

Social Security benefits are paid for by Social Security taxes, NOT the general fund. Trying to cut into the federal deficit by cutting Social Security benefits is like paying off your credit card debt with my retirement fund.

The entitlements that are on the table are food stamps, medicaid, education and SSI welfare... you just have to ask yourself, "What it is worth to keep po' folks from begging on the streets for schooling, food and medical attention?"

Medicare is a hybrid bitch that saves our precious insurance industry billions by relieving them of responsibility for the hard working Americans who contributed to private insurance funds all their working lives only to have the bad luck to reach age 65 or become disabled while working.
