Joe Theismann should have got the HT

May not like him .

But he was good.
Very good.

Should be in th NFL HOF

Plunkett lost 4 freaking games in 1970 for chrissakes incl to San Jose St.

Make no mistake - I admire the guy - overachieved in the NFL.

Joe lost one game in 1970 to USC - and passed for 526 yards.

After that - led the Irish to victory over Texas as 14 pt dogs - snapped the Longhorns 30 game win streak.

It wasn't just between Jim and Joe.

Are you forgetting Archie Mannings year at Ole Miss?

And Notre Dame had a better supporting cast than Plunkett had.

Plunkett had more touchdowns and more total yards.

Most Heismann QB winners dont lose 4 freaking games.

Manning should have been the runner-up

Apparently those choosing the Heismann that year felt differently, in fact Plunkett had the second most points of all time.

And he didn't have to change his name to rhyme with Heismann.

If the award were given out for the best team you might have a point. This is one of the big problems with the way the Heisman has been awarded in recent years.

It is supposed to be about the best player in college football. But in recent years, it has been about the best player on one of the top ranked teams. Plenty of players have been amazingly good, but have not had the supporting team to win the most games.

Plunkett had more TDs and more yards than anyone that year. That his team did not win all their games does not change the fact that he was voted the best PLAYER that year.
