I stole this from the Current Events forum, but it needs more discussion here on the religious aspect.

Let me just say, first off:


The professor has a point.

I would like to hear thoughts and perspectives on this.

I don't really think it makes sense to try to analyze the story with regard to consent unless you're going to accept (for the sake of the analysis) the internal view of the story, and within the story it would seem that Mary consented (e.g. Luke 1)

I mean I think it's clear that norms regarding sexual morality among Judeans at the time the N.T. was written are much different from modern norms, and far more patriarchal, so if the professor wants to make a more general point about that history of patriarchy and women's sexual agency then I think that's not hard to do. But I don't think this particular story makes a great example of it. It's basically just provocative for the sake of provocation.

You really just can't say what's obvious? That this guy made that tweet to be an asshole to Christians, and no other reason?
