Hating Hatters
I'll admit, I've no problem with people owning guns. In fact I think that the slim chance we could rise up against a bad government justifies it easily.

But I often wonder, how do Christians reconcile their belief in people owning guns with the teachings of Jesus?

:eusa_eh:

Doesn't the Bible have a saying, "An eye for an eye?"

We kill in war, and if we are threatened, and some want the death penalty. But abortion is murder, but welfare and programs to help the needy children is too much money spent by the government, but they hate this and that.............I get so confused sometimes on what some people really believe, I honestly do.

I've never read anywhere in my Bible where Jesus even mentioned guns or gave out any rules for their use. As far as that goes, Jesus gave us no rules for watching TV, computer use, or even how to operate an automobile. My point is this, aren't you really stretching your beliefs on guns just a bit too far or is it Jesus you are poking fun at? Either way, it really doesn't have much bearing. I think you're a little off key here.

Maybe I'm wrong, but an eye for an eye is old testament, no? I thought Jesus was all about turning the other cheek...anyway, he didn't seem to like violence so I have to wonder why he'd like a tool that was invented to kill.

You're a fucking idiot, Rav. Gun owners for the most part own them because they either hunt, enjoy the beauty of the weaponry, or want to be able to protect themselves.

There's nothing in the bible that remotely discourages any of those things.

Christians aren't some monolithic group.

There are socialist Christians and libertarian Christians. The Bible provides support for both positions, depending upon which passages you quote.

Enjoy the beauty of the weaponry...lol, that's pretty good, Allie. You avoided my question.

No I didn't, idiot. I said there's nothing in the bible which discourages the ownership of weapons.

And in fact, the disciples were armed. Peter cut the ear off one of the Romans who arrested Christ. Christ didn't use the moment to adjour good Christians to get rid of their daggers at that time, or any other.

You don't own the gun to kill, you own the gun to keep from being killed or for sport.

I don't see where Jesus would have a problem with that.

You can kill someone with a fork or a shovel or a rope...If you want to kill someone you find a way, it's not the gun that is the killer it is the spirit of the man holding the weapon.

 So a gun used to maim is okay

While the Bible doesn't mention guns, it thoroughly endorses the use of swords.

The Bible endorses killing, in dozens and dozens of passages.

Ravi. Guns are for killing animals, not just people. Most people who have them have no desire to ever aim them at a person or go out hunting humans.

Knives have many uses besides killing as well.

Jesus told Peter to halt and desist fighting when they took Jesus. But once again, nowhere in the bible will you find a commandment not to own weapons.

Of course it does. Which is why when people say we should follow it, I look at them like they're insane.

Deuteronomy 17:12
And the man that will do presumptuously, and will not hearken unto the priest that standeth to minister there before the LORD thy God, or unto the judge, even that man shall die: and thou shalt put away the evil from Israel.

Leviticus 20:27
A man also or woman that hath a familiar spirit, or that is a wizard, shall surely be put to death: they shall stone them with stones: their blood shall be upon them

2 Chronicles 15:12-13
2And they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD God of their fathers with all their heart and with all their soul;

13That whosoever would not seek the LORD God of Israel should be put to death, whether small or great, whether man or woman.

And those are by far not the worst.
