NEW YORK — "Law & Order" star Jerry Orbach (search) has died of prostate cancer at age 69, a representative of the show said.

Earlier this month, Orbach's manager announced that he had been diagnosed with the disease. But he was optimistic.

"We expect he'll be fine. He's been playing golf, shooting his episodes and doing real well," manager Robert Malcolm told the New York Daily News.

Orbach starred for 12 seasons in the original "Law & Order" (search) series, but left to head the spin-off "Law & Order: Trial by Jury," (search) set to debut next year.

The show's producer, Dick Wolf, also had high hopes for Orbach.

"We expect him to make a full and swift recovery, and while he is receiving treatment, we will work around his schedule," Wolf told the News.

Orbach began playing Detective Lennie Briscoe in 1992, the original show's third season.

Born in the Bronx, he was in the original cast of the off-off-Broadway hit "The Fantasticks" and has appeared in such films as "Dirty Dancing," "Prince of the City" and "Crimes and Misdemeanors."

I am so sad about this-I loved him. Law and Order is my favorite show and one of the only ones I even watch on the networks anymore. I was looking forward to the spinoff. RIP Jerry

It's a bit surprising, as well as sad, you would think with all the early detection of Prostrate Cancer and the high cure rate, he would have survived........maybe he didn't know he had it until it was too far along?

A lot of famous men either have had prostate cancer or died from it..... Frank Zappa, Francois Mitterand, Telly Savalas, Rudy Guiliani, Arnold Palmer, Harry Belafonte, Nelson Mandela, Robert Goulet, John Kerry, Norman Schwarzkopf, Colin Powell, Bob Dole, Bill Bixby, now Jerry Orbach....

Prostrate Cancer is definitely a killer.... my Dad had it several years ago and had to have surgery. One year, he was fine, then two years later he had it and it was about to spread into his other organs. The surgeon's explanation was that the cancer was at a point that chemo might not be effective. Aa second opinion that came to the same conclusion.

At first my Dad refused to believe he had cancer because he said the he "felt fine" and was thinking of ignoring his doctor's advice. I told him that prostate cancer doesn't necessarily have any symptoms. I told him he had two choices, surgery to remove the gland or death. My Dad hestitatingly chose the former. My Dad is now completely recovered and you wouldn't even know that he had cancer.

I think that prostate cancer definitely does not get the attention that other cancers have..... men over 50 should get screened regularly!
