Japan Plans a Moon Base by 2020, Built by Robots for Robots ? Tech & Gadgets

America may have eighty-sixed its moon base ambitions, but the Japanese have no plans to let perfectly good lunar real estate go to waste. An ambitious $2.2 billion project in the works at JAXA, the Japanese space agency, plans to put humanoid robots on the moon by 2015, and now official backing from the Prime Minister’s office says the Japanese could have an unmanned lunar base up and running by 2020.

Key to all of this, of course, is the robots themselves, and who better than the Japanese to dream up and realize the kind of intelligent, self-repairing, multitasking bots that will be needed to fulfill such a mission.

As currently envisioned, the robots that will land on the lunar surface in 2015 will be 660-pound behemoths equipped with rolling tank-like treads, solar panels, seismographs, high-def cameras and a smattering of scientific instruments. They’ll also have human-like arms for collecting rock samples that will be returned to Earth via rocket. The robots will be controlled from Earth, but they’ll also be imbued with their own kind of machine intelligence, making decisions on their own and operating with a high degree of autonomy.

It would be pretty cool if they were able to pull it off, they certainly have a great shot.

I think in exchange for us providing them a military, they should take over the space program. The Japanese have proven they are capable of doing this. They for one have much better manufacturing guidelines than we do. We could even work out a trade agreement. But I guess that would be thinking out of the box.

If they were to work out a trade agreement it would likely be with another manufacturing/engineering great. Germany.
murka will continue to take FreeDumb and DemoNcracy to the "little people", until she becomes a fourth world hellhole, while they advance.

It would have to be, because Japans population is shrinking. Seems young people don't wanna' live the Japanese Lifestyle anymore and they don't like immigration so, they're fucked.

Seems to me its a great deal of time, effort and money for a barren, lifeless and otherwise uninteresting satellite, no?

.......Until some hacker prankster wants to make them do the Moonwalk inadvertently sending rockets to earth. I really don't think the moon should be screwed with too much. It has too much direct impact on life on earth.

You fools! The Japanese will use it as a base to train their people to out MoonWalk us! Since the death of MJ, we've become vulnerable!

As Buck Turginson would say, "Mr. President, we cannot allow a MoonWalk Gap!!"

Ah ha!

This must be what Obama meant when he said he would `endorse the goal of sending human missions to the moon by 2020, as a precursor in an orderly progression to missions to more distant destinations, including Mars'.

Stupid us for thinking he meant American's.

It is an admirable goal. Human history has shown that the human race needs to reach out and explore. We are always raising questions about who we are or what is out there. This planet’s unknowns are steadily decreasing with the deep oceans becoming our lost frontier here. Space may be our only hope of keeping our race interested in expanding our minds and knowledge. Most of the discoveries and technological breakthroughs in history were accomplished as a result of exploration. Yes some were as a result of war too. The use of robots here is increasing including their use in combat.

The moon has minerals and without an oxygen atmosphere solar power is a viable power source, and nuclear generators would be a viable source as well. Whether it is feasible to mine these minerals and ship them to earth is open to argument. But to use the moon as a weigh station or jump off point to Mars or some other planet sounds like a good idea and robots can help construct a base.

What I would like to see is all the major nations, like the Japanese, Russians, Chinese, The Euro’s, and other wealthy nations join together and form a unified space agency. Combine our resources instead of competing against each other to explore space. Sure we will keep our military space program separate but combine the civilian programs.

Makes more sense than a manned moon base.

Robots don't need oxygen, food or water. If they break, nobody really cares. The cost and risk of the project decreases dramatically when you don't worry about the human element.

So maybe it should be run by Democrats?

I wasn't aware of a Democratic Party in Japan
