janis joplin

Yellow Rose, Waco Moon
quit too late, you're gonna die too soon
woman with a needle and a silver spoon
holed up singing the devil's tune

playing the blues paying your dues
speeding your young life away
I never will get over what I heard about you
the first thing new Year's day

I can't say I felt so sad
the truth is, I think I'm mad
at the selfish way you left your Dad
when you know what a hard luck time he's had

Sleeping through a dream come true
you just threw all that talent away
I never will get over what I heard about you
the first thing New Years Day

Ooh, slipping away
Ooh, New Year's Day

I threw the phone against the wall
Falling apart when I got the call
Went out walking with the weight of it all
That's when it hit me like a waterfall

I'm playing the blues,
Paying my dues,
Speeding my young life away.
I never will get over what I heard about you
The first thing New Year's Day.

Ooh, slipping away
Ooh, New Year's Day

Yellow rose, Waco moon
Quit too late, you die too soon
To the bitter end, tried and true,
Goodbye old friend, we'll be missing you

Sue Foley is pretty damn good. Big Mamma Thorton and Memphis Minnie are among my favs.

By the time Janis recorded Pearl, her voice was going down hill at 26 or 27. I think she would have killed her voice, eventually - sooner than later/

Lucinda! How could I forget. I've seen both, not together - awesome!

Susan Tedeschi had her moments too, although very mellow. Not impressed with her live show several years ago.

Is janis joplin the best female rocker ever?

No. Even though she mentions my name in one of her "hits" anyone with a modicome of talent that smokes enough and drinks enough could sing like she did. The band was just as much of an asset as she was to Big Brother and the Holding Company.

I don't think it's the smokes and drink.
I've seen her live, and when she talks her voice soft and quiet. But when she sings, this hugh voice emerges.
I saw her in the sixties at the Quaker City Rock Festival in her last tour with Big Brother along with Moby Grape, Vanilla Fudge, Buddy Guy, the Chambers Brothers and Terry Reid

I wouldn't call her a "rocker" per se, but I've never heard anyone that can sing like Sandy Denny. GRHS.

Chamber Brothers? Oh man...."Time Has Come Today"....what a classic.

Joplin was good.... but it comes down to her basically being a drugged out, drunk, hippie bitch... not that she was passionate

If you didn't realize.. she was CONTINUALLY looking for 1-upsmanship... like when she went back to her home town strutting like a fucking peacock in a failed attempt to stick it to ones from her past... it wasn't passion, it was hiding from demons

There are some songs of hers where I think she belts it out pretty good.. but for the most part, most of her songs are forgettable at best
