Italy bans the burqa

ITALY has banned Islamic burqas under tough terrorism laws that provide two-year jail terms and E2000 ($3200) fines for anyone caught covering their face in a public place.

The counter-terrorism package, passed by Italy's parliament yesterday, doubles the existing penalty for wearing a burqa or chador -- traditional robes worn by Muslim women to cover their faces -- or full-faced helmets or balaclavas in public.

Police can extract DNA samples without a suspect's consent, detain them for 24 hours without a lawyer present, and deport foreigners suspected of terrorism under the new legislation. Soldiers involved in counter-terrorism have been given the same stop-and-search powers.

The changes, approved in a rare show of bipartisanship, came as Italian police arrested a fugitive hunted by British police over the bungled bombing attempt in London on July 21.

Awesome. Too bad we can't have a little of that here instead of a bandaid law to appease and protect the left while not inconveniencing them.

I have no objection. Read the Koran and you will learn that burqas do not necessarily have to cover the face.

just wondering when the good old USA will!...Maybe when we terminate the ACLU! :terror:

Well, I hate to say it, but I think it will take a few more attacks..Hope I'm wrong.

However it will also take getting rid of the ACLU...they have been tying our hands for way too long! They must go!!!!! :banana2:

A leading muslim figure in the UK Dr Zaki Badawi, head of the muslim college in London and chairman of the council of mosques and Imams has suggested Islamic women stop wearing Hijab head scarves, amid a rise in hate crimes.

There were 269 crimes in three weeks after the 7th July bombings, compared with 40 in the same period in 2004.

Dr Badawi said "a women wearing the hijab could suffer aggression from irresponsible elements".

*Even here in Wales the hate crimes are getting quite bad.A doctor was chased through the streets of Abergavenny last night pelted with eggs and called a paki b*****d.Its only because he managed to escape up a side street that he wasnt attacked.

I (heart) Italy.

I lived there for 6 years.

When it comes to certain things, they don't play.

I lived there too. They don't care much about being politically correct along racial and religious lines. They do have a strong socialist bent however. They are politically correct along socio-economic lines.
