This post is for serious students of this topic.

This morning I happened to catch the last few minutes of a C-SPAN discussion with Ronen Bergman who has written a new book entitled Rise and Kill First: The Secret History of Israel's Assassinations.

Here are three points that I heard.

1. Unlike most other countries, it is the military that often tries to restrain the civilian leaders from taking certain actions.

2. Assassinations often have unintended consequences.

a. Mr. Bergman cites the case in which Israel assassinated a terrorist leader in Lebanon. He was replaced by another terrorist who decided that instead of carrying out operations only in Lebanon, he would attack the Israelis abroad. He was responsible for the bombing of the Israeli embassy in Buenos Aires.

3. Mr. Bergman says that there is always a serious discussion as to the target. Should only the actual terrorists be assassinated? Or should anyone belonging to the infrastructure of a terrorist group be targeted, too?
