So Roudy tell us about your younger days....how was the debke dancing? :D
Never debka danced, but I have a lot of Kurdish Iraqi relatives we do the Kurdish dancing during celebrations. It's similar to Debka dancing. I was educated in Western English schools all my life I listened to pop and rock even when I was a young boy. Used to go to the London a lot and come back with like 30 of the latest hit records. Queen, Fleetwood Mac, Beattles, Led Zep, Stevie Miller, ELO, Elton John, etc. that was my genre.

Yeah those were hits at your time, probably still are now too.

No I haven't, I think every Arab knows the best singer is Qazzim Al Sahir, and George, Oum Kalthoum everyone liked too. And Mohammad Abdu .....
My dad played Oum Kalthoum a lot on trips when we were kids. He'd shove us in the back seat of his mercedes and force us to listen all the way. I know some of her songs by heart ha ha. When Nasser lost the war to the Israelis she nearly had a heart attack. Too bad such a beautiful voice became political.

Lol....my Dad listens to her all the time everywhere it's so annoying, I can't handle it. I don't much of her but almost every 40-50 year old Arab man listens to her.

Well I'm much older than they are, and I don't listen to her. Her songs bring back memories of my childhood and a secure, safe world.

Roudy, you must like the Persian singer Sattar. Someone said he was known as the Elvis Presley of Iran, and that the Shah's daughter wanted to marry him.

I had a Muslim friend who played in Satar's band in a few special occasions. Poor guy went to Iran to visit his family and got arrested and taken into a prison infamous for torturing. Satar had expressed anti Islamic Republic views in the past and they felt my friend also shared the same views. Anyhow after months of interrogation, torture and mock execution after mock execution, the family finally was able to bribe the officials into sparing his life. He escaped through the border shortly thereafter. Needless to say, that was the last time he will go back.

Satar's music was always too depressing and heavy for me. I used to like Googosh back in the 60's and 70's in Iran. This is her singing on Iranian national TV 50 years ago, check out how she dressed and danced, something that will surely bring harsh punishment by the Islamic animals today. It is not an exaggeration to say that the Mullahs took Iran back 500 years.
