Settler shoots Palestinian farmer in olive grove brawl

By Arnon Regular, Amos Harel and Jonathan Lis

A settler yesterday shot and critically wounded a Palestinian farmer working in his olive grove in the Nablus region. Hani Shadeh, 26, from the village of Asira al-Qibliye, was shot in the neck when a group of settlers from the settlement of Yitzhar tried to chase away the farmers from the groves.

The wounded man was taken to Rafadiya hospital where his condition was described last night as stable.

Israel Defense Forces troops were called to the area to break up the ensuing fist fight between the settlers and the Palestinians and one of the soldiers opened fire in the air, claiming that the Palestinians had come threateningly near to the settlers and one had appeared to be trying to grab a gun.

According to Hani Mahlouf, one of the farmers, a group of settlers arrived at the scene yesterday afternoon. "One of them, dressed in black, knelt down and took aim at Ahmed and a soldier stood next to him and did nothing." Three settlers who had scuffled with the Palestinians were later detained by soldiers, he said.

IDF officers say they are expecting an escalation in violence in the Samaria region because of the settlers' attacks on the Palestinians. There have been at least 10 scuffles between settlers and Palestinian farmers in the past week alone. Two weeks ago, a villager from Salem was shot to death by a settler.

In view of past experience, the IDF has taken special precautions and has defined certain areas near settlements that are considered extremist (such as Yitzhar and Itamar) as "friction areas." The army has fixed certain times with the Palestinian farmers to gather their harvest in these areas under military protection.

The IDF said that yesterday's incident had taken place in a "friction area" but that there were no troops on hand to guard the farmers since the Palestinians had arrived at the groves without prior notice.

In effect, the IDF has provided timetables to more than 30 Palestinian villages, in the friction areas. In most cases, the hours at their disposal have been drastically cut and in some cases, they have only one day to bring in the entire harvest.

The IDF distributed the timetables, headlined "The Israeli plan for olive harvesting," with tables showing the hours and the areas where the groves are close to the settlements. Although IDF sources say they will provide protection for the farmers for enough time to harvest their crops, in effect it is virtually impossible for the Palestinians to reach about one-third of their crops in the Nablus region.

According to the IDF, the timetable was worked out together with the Palestinian Authority's agriculture ministry and with the agreement of the villagers. The settlers were also informed about the arrangements. However, many villagers told Haaretz they are dissatisfied with the plan. The harvest will officially start next week and will last about five weeks.

"Those people from the PA who sat with the Israelis don't know the area and don't understand anything about olive harvesting," said Walid Jabber, a farmer from Hirbet Yanoun. "This is an average season but, in my opinion, [the agreement means that] most of the fruit will remain on the trees."

IDF officials said last night that they had done their best to work out a timetable with all concerned and that, if there are problems in individual villages, they will try to revise the hours and provide the farmers with protection.

I wonder what will happen to all the fruit that the Palestinians can't pick in one day?

Rocket Attack Kills 2 Children in Israel
Gaza Clashes Claim 3 Palestinian Teens

JERUSALEM, Sept. 29 -- Palestinian radicals in the Gaza Strip fired a rocket barrage into a nearby Israeli city Wednesday, killing two children and wounding 10 people, Israeli defense officials said. The rockets were launched from an area of Gaza where Israeli troops and helicopters were staging a major incursion in an attempt to stop such attacks.
One of the rockets fired at the city of Sderot slammed into an alleyway between houses, killing two Ethiopian immigrant children from an extended family, according to Israeli media reports, which identified the victims as Dorit Aniso, 2, and Yuval Abebeh, 4. Israel has a large community of Ethiopian Jews.
During the incursion, Israeli forces killed five Palestinians -- including three teenage boys -- and wounded at least 28 people, according to Palestinian medical and security officials. Israeli forces also shot and killed three Palestinians in the West Bank, the officials said.
Three more Palestinians were killed in the Jabalya refugee camp in Gaza by a missile fired from an Israeli helicopter late Wednesday night, the Reuters news agency reported. Shortly afterward, a Palestinian charity office in Gaza City was destroyed in a separate helicopter strike, which caused no casualties, witnesses said. Israel has accused the charity, which aids bereaved families and relatives of prisoners, of having links to radical groups.
Palestinian radicals and Israeli government officials trace a recent rise in Palestinian rocket and mortar attacks in the Gaza area to a plan by Israel's prime minister, Ariel Sharon, to withdraw Jewish settlers and troops from the region. Both sides say the attacks are meant to portray the Israeli army as retreating under fire and suffering a major defeat.
Israeli armored vehicles, backed by AH-64 Apache helicopter gunships, entered the Gaza Strip late Tuesday, targeting fighters who have been launching Qassam rockets, fashioned from metal pipes, toward Sderot, which is about two miles outside the border.
On Wednesday, Israeli tanks and Apache gunships fired at Palestinians armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles, anti-tank rockets and roadside bombs in skirmishes throughout the day and into the night, according to witnesses and Israeli military officials.
At 5 p.m., about an hour before Jews in Israel began celebrating the religious holiday of Sukkot, Palestinians fired three rockets at Sderot from the northern Gaza area where the Israeli forces were operating, according to Capt. Jacob Dallal, an Israeli military spokesman.
"Finding a Qassam missile is like finding a needle in a haystack," Dallal said. "For militant groups, it takes a few minutes to pull it off. They run into an open area, fire and run back into the thick of the haystack."
The Islamic Resistance Movement, known as Hamas, asserted responsibility for the attack and said it was retribution for the Israeli incursion. "Israel will react to this attack," Sharon said in a statement released by his office.
Israeli troops killed five Palestinians during Wednesday's operation. Palestinian medical officials said the victims included Saed Abu Aish, 14, and Ali Mady, 16, who they said were throwing stones at tanks. Medical officials also said they treated numerous other children for injuries.
Also killed were Tawfik Shrafi, a member of Hamas who Palestinian witnesses said was trying to lay a mine, and Mosab Baradey, from the Popular Resistance Committees, according to communiques from the two radical groups.
Mohammed Jaber, 16, died from a bullet wound as he tried to cross a road blocked by Israeli troops south of Gaza City, medical officials said.
An Israeli defense spokeswoman said troops targeted Palestinian fighters who were attacking tanks, planting explosives and trying to launch Qassam rockets. "There were also several incidents of exchanges of fire" when crowds gathered around tanks, the spokeswoman said.
Late Wednesday, more Israeli troops and armored vehicles were moving into the northern Gaza Strip, Israeli television Channel 2 reported.
Since the start of the current Palestinian uprising four years ago, Palestinians have fired about 470 Qassams and other crude rockets into Israeli communities near the Gaza Strip and at Jewish settlements inside Gaza, according to Shin Bet, the Israeli domestic intelligence agency.
The Palestinian fighters generally use fruit and olive orchards inside northern Gaza as cover when launching the rockets over the heavily fortified border.
Israeli troops have gone into the area repeatedly to try to stop the rocket attacks. The soldiers have destroyed hundreds of acres of Palestinian orchards and uprooted tens of thousands of trees there, according to the United Nations.

we're not here to debate terrorism and occupation-resistance... we know its wrong. there are sadly, however, some people who wish to pretend israel is without fault and that the settlers are "honorable" people who do no wrong. that is the point of the thread and of future ones where i intend to explore with the board members the depth of the injustice that is the settler movement.

violent resistance against settlers.... excellent (in most cases)
violent resistance against innocent israelis at a club or cafe... horrible always

open your eyes and see the difference.

The differentiation you suggest has no basis in fact. In the real world, Palestinians view all Israelis as "settlers." Palestinians and their leaders seek the complete elimination of Israel. If not, then why did the Palestinians refuse the Clinton brokered peace deal that complied with 95 percent of their demands? The Palestinians are not only resisting the so-called settlers; they are resisting all Israelis. The Palestinians do not "open their eyes to the difference." To them, there is no difference. War is taking place between Israelis and Palestinians. In war the enemy is destroyed.

arafat... the autocratic ruler of the palestinians, rejected that offer. if the palestinians had good leadership, who knows?

not all palestinians view all israelis as settlers. notice i differentiate between the 90% of israelis who are peace-loving, good people in general, and the 10% of settler extremists who do their fair share to ruin the future, just like the palestinians who are terrorists.
