If you go to the Middle East looking for oil, you don't need to stop in Israel. But, if you're looking for brains, for energy, for integrity, for imagination, it's the only stop you need to make"

Professor Yosef Shiloh, of Tel Aviv University's Sackler Medical School, has won the prestigious Clowes Award presented by the American Association for Cancer Research, it was announced this week.

"Professor Shiloh is an international leader in his field and an extraordinary scientist," AACR director Dr. Margaret Foti wrote in the explanation for awarding him the prize. "His work has launched a scientific revolution and opened up new horizons in the understanding of how the living cell copes with DNA damage, which is among the main factors in cancer."

Shiloh will receive the prize, which includes a $10,000 grant, a commemorative plaque, and funding to attend with a guest the AACR Annual Meeting in Orlando Florida in April.

Shiloh will receive the prize, which includes a $10,000 grant, a commemorative plaque, and funding to attend with a guest the AACR Annual Meeting in Orlando Florida in April.

Shiloh has devoted his career to research ataxia telangiectasia (A-T ), a rare, neurodegenerative, inherited disease that affects many parts of the body and causes severe disability. In Israel it is manifested mostly among people of North African origin and the Palestinian and Bedouin communities.

Shiloh has made several discoveries that contributed to understanding the disease, including discovering the defective gene causing it. This enabled detection of the disease in the early stages of pregnancy and paved the way to understanding its basis - a defective DNA damage response.

Shiloh began researching A-T in 1977 after meeting a family from the Negev whose four children suffered from the disease. His work focused on the mechanisms that enable the cell to overcome DNA damage caused by various environmental factors such as radiation, chemicals in food and pollutants.

This damage is common in healthy people as well, but it is repaired by complex defense mechanisms, which are vital to preserving cell life and preventing cancer. These defense mechanisms, however, are not activated in A-T patients.

"Our great hope is that understanding the complex defense mechanism will enable new ways of treating the disease and other diseases caused by failures in our defense from DNA damages," Shiloh said.

Kudo's to the Israeli scientist for his research. However, what Israel giveth, they also taketh away...

Between 90% and 95% of the aquifers in the Gaza Strip are not safe for drinking, in part because of the severe restrictions imposed by Israel on the entry of spare parts to repair the water and sewage infrastructures, this after 11 water springs, 20 kilometers of water pipes, 7.5 kilometers of sewage pipes and 5,700 mobile water tanks were destroyed in Operation Cast Lead, according to the report. As a result of this, 39% of the households in the Gaza Strip enjoy running water only two to three days a week and 20% of all households have reported that at least one child under the age of five currently suffers from illnesses caused by the poor water quality and the poor condition of the sewage infrastructures.
Kind of interesting how on the one hand, Israel makes progress on cancer research, but on the other, they create more cancers with their apartheid policies towards the Palestinian's.

When the first Zionist conference met in 1897, Palestine was a neglected wasteland

I first saw Palestine in 1939. There the neglect and ruin left by centuries of Ottoman [Muslim] misrule were slowly being transformed by miracles of [Jewish] labor and sacrifice. But Palestine was still a land of promise in 1939, rather than a land of fulfillment. I returned in 1951 to see the grandeur of Israel

I left with the conviction that the United Nations may have conferred on Israel the credentials of nationhood; but its own idealism and courage, its own sacrifice and generosity, had earned the credentials of immortality.

Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy and it honors the sword of freedom; and no area of the world has ever had an overabundance of democracy and freedom.

It is worth remembering, too, that Israel is a cause that stands beyond the ordinary changes and chances of American public life. In our pluralistic society, it has not been a Jewish cause - any more than Irish independence was solely the concern of Americans of Irish descent. The ideals of Zionism have, in the last half century, been repeatedly endorsed by Presidents and Members of Congress from both parties. Friendship for Israel is not a partisan matter. It is a national commitment.

The original Zionist philosophy has always maintained that the people of Israel would use their national genius not for selfish purposes but for the enrichment and glory of the entire Middle East. The earliest leaders of the Zionist movement spoke of a Jewish state which would have no military power and which would be content with victories of the spirit

The technical skills and genius of Israel have already brought their blessings to Burma and to Ethiopia. Still other nations in Asia and in Africa are eager to benefit from the special skills available in that bustling land

I studied the Koran a great deal. I came away from that study with the conviction there have been few religions in the world as deadly to men as that of Muhammad. So far as I can see, it is the principal cause of the decadence so visible today in the Muslim world and, though less absurd than the polytheism of old, its social and political tendencies are in my opinion to be feared, and I therefore regard it as a form of decadence rather than a form of progress in relation to paganism itself.

When the first Zionist conference met in 1897, Palestine was a neglected wasteland
If it was a neglected wasteland, why was it necessary to drive out over 700,000 arabs from that wasteland with the use of jewish terrorism?

Because The Arabs attacked Israel when it was formed. The land was never Arab land to begin with. It was run by the Brits and before that for 500 years the Ottomans. As a result of this attack on Israel, refugees where created. These same refugees sided with The Arabs in their effort to destroy Israel, even though Israel offered them a different choice. There are about two million Arabs living in Israel with full Israeli rights that made that choice. Funny thing is there was no such thing as a " Palestinian Arab" until the mid sixtees.
