What is Beneath the Temple Mount?
Temple-Mount-Dome-of-the-Rock-631.jpg__800x600_q85_crop.jpg

My stint as an amateur archaeologist began one morning on the southern slope of Mount Scopus, a hill on the northern outskirts of Jerusalem. Inside a large hothouse covered in plastic sheets and marked ā€œTemple Mount Salvage Operation,ā€ aā€ˆwoman from Boston named Frankie Snyderā€”a volunteer turned stafferā€”led me to three rows of black plastic buckets, each half-filled with stones and pebbles, then pointed out a dozen wood-framed screens mounted on plastic stands. My job, she said, was to dump each bucket onto a screen, rinse off any soil with water from a garden hose, then pluck out anything of potential importance.

It wasnā€™t as easy as it sounded. A chunk of what looked like conglomerate rock turned out to be plaster used to line cisterns during the time of Herod the Great, some 2,000 years ago. When I tossed aside a shard of green glass I thought was from a soft-drink bottle, Snyder snatched it up. ā€œNotice the bubbles,ā€ she told me, holding it up to the light. ā€œThat indicates itā€™s ancient glass, because during that time, oven temperatures didnā€™t reach as high as they do now.ā€

Gradually, I got the hang of it. I spotted the handle of an ancient piece of pottery, complete with an indentation for thumb support. I retrieved a rough-edged coin minted more than 1,500 years ago and bearing the profile of a Byzantine emperor. I also found a shard of glass from what could only have been a Heineken bottleā€”a reminder that the Temple Mount has also been the scene of less historic activities.

The odds and ends I was gathering are the fruits of one of Israelā€™s most intriguing archaeological undertakings: a grain-by-grain analysis of debris trucked out of the Temple Mount, the magnificent edifice that has served the faithful as a symbol of Godā€™s glory for 3,000 years and remains the crossroads of the three great monotheistic religions.

Jewish tradition holds that it is the site where God gathered the dust to create Adam and where Abraham nearly sacrificed his son Isaac to prove his faith. King Solomon, according to the Bible, built the First Temple of the Jews on this mountaintop circa 1000 B.C., only to have it torn down 400 years later by troops commanded by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar, who sent many Jews into exile. In the first century B.C., Herod expanded and refurbished a Second Temple built by Jews who had returned after their banishment. It is here that, according to the Gospel of John, Jesus Christ lashed out against the money changers (and was later crucified a few hundred yards away). The Roman general Titus exacted revenge against Jewish rebels, sacking and burning the Temple in A.D. 70.

Muslim myths exposed:

The Islamic claim to the Temple Mount is very recent

Jerusalem's role as "The Third Holiest Site in Islam" in mainstream Islamic writings does not precede the 1930s. It was created by the Grand Mufti Haj Amin al Husseini
Most of the problems surrounding Jerusalem can be traced to two areas of dispute. One is the political area that asks Jerusalem to be the capital of both Israel and the nascent Palestine. The other and most contentious problem is the holiness of Temple Mount to both Judaism and Islam.

The role Jerusalem has in the Hebrew holy works is well known and not open to debate; however, there are varying opinions on the holiness of Jerusalem, specifically Temple Mount to Islam.

Many if not most opinions that counter Islam's claim point out the Jerusalem is not mentioned in the Quran and did not occupy any special role in Islam until recent political exigencies transformed Jerusalem into Islam's third holy site.

Jerusalem's role as "The Third Holiest Site in Islam" in mainstream Islamic writings does not precede the 1930s.

It was created by the Grand Mufti, Haj Amin al Husseini. The Mufti knew that nationalist slogans alone would not succeed in uniting the masses against arriving Jewish refugees. He therefore turned the struggle into a religious conflict. He addressed the masses clearly, calling for a holy war. His battle cry was simple and comprehensive: "Down with the Infidels!" From the time Herbert Samuel appointed him to the position of Mufti, Haj Amin worked vigorously to raise Jerusalem's status as an Islamic holy center. He renovated the mosques on the Temple Mount, while conducting an unceasing campaign regarding the imminent Jewish "threat" to Moslem holy sites.

The Moslem Claim to Jerusalem is False
There were no mosques in Jerusalem in 632CE when the Prophet Mohammed died... Jerusalem was [then] a Christian city
by Dr. Manfred R. Lehmann

The Moslem "claim" to Jerusalem is based on what is written in the Koran, which although Jerusalem is not mentioned even once, nevertheless talks (in Sura 17:1) of the "Furthest Mosque": "Glory be unto Allah who did take his servant for a journey at night from the Sacred Mosque to the Furthest Mosque." But is there any foundation to the Moslem argument that this "Furthest Mosque" (Al-Masujidi al-Aqtza) refers to what is today called the Aksa Mosque in Jerusalem? The answer is, none whatsoever.

In the days of Mohammed, who died in 632 of the Common Era, Jerusalem was a Christian city within the Byzantine Empire. Jerusalem was captured by Khalif Omar only in 638, six years after Mohammed's death. Throughout all this time there were only churches in Jerusalem, and a church stood on the Temple Mount, called the Church of Saint Mary of Justinian, built in the Byzantine architectural style.

The Aksa Mosque was built 20 years after the Dome of the Rock, which was built in 691-692 by Khalif Abd El Malik. The name "Omar Mosque" is therefore false. In or around 711, or about 80 years after Mohammed died, Malik's son, Abd El-Wahd - who ruled from 705-715 - reconstructed the Christian- Byzantine Church of St. Mary and converted it into a mosque. He left the structure as it was, a typical Byzantine "basilica" structure with a row of pillars on either side of the rectangular "ship" in the center. All he added was an onion-like dome on top of the building to make it look like a mosque. He then named it El-Aksa, so it would sound like the one mentioned in the Koran.

Therefore it is crystal clear that Mohammed could never have had this mosque in mind when he compiled the Koran, since it did not exist for another three generations after his death. Rather, as many scholars long ago established, it is logical that Mohammed intended the mosque in Mecca as the "Sacred Mosque," and the mosque in Medina as the "Furthest Mosque." So much for the Moslem claim based on the Aksa Mosque.

With this understood, it is no wonder that Mohammed issued a strict prohibition against facing Jerusalem in prayer, a practice that had been tolerated only for some months in order to lure Jews to convert to Islam. When that effort failed, Mohammed put an abrupt stop to it on February 12, 624. Jerusalem simply never held any sanctity for the Moslems themselves, but only for the Jews in their domain.

According to the traditional Muslim view, the Qiblah originally faced the Noble Sanctuary in Jerusalem. This Qiblah was used for over 13 years, from 610 CE until 623 CE. Seventeen months after the Islamic prophetMuhammad's 622 CE arrival in Medina ā€“ the date is given as 11 February 624 ā€“ the Qiblah became oriented towards the Kaaba in Mecca.[2][3] According to traditional accounts from Muhammad'scompanions, the change happened very suddenly during the noon prayer in Medina, in a mosque now known as Masjid al-Qiblatayn(Mosque of the Two Qiblahs).[3] Muhammad was leading the prayer when he received revelations from God instructing him to take the Kaaba as the Qiblah (literally, "Turn then Thy face in the direction of the sacred Mosque:").[3][4] According to the traditional accounts contained in the hadith and sira, Muhammad, who had been facing Jerusalem, upon receiving this revelation, immediately turned around to face Mecca, and those praying behind him also did so.

It was just a dream

Mohammed turned away from Jerusalem leaving it to the jews and christians. Mecca was the place for the muslims.
Even Omar consulted the jews regarding the mount and built al-aqsa off to the corner so muslims would have a place to pray while the other pilgrims visited the rock. Everyone had their place on the mount. No jews or christian should be kept from the mount.

Sephardi Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar, along with several other senior rabbis, issued a public statement on Tuesday warning the public that visiting the Temple Mount is forbidden by Jewish law.

According to the statement, the warning is being issued at this time because of increased organized attempts to go up to the holy site.

ā€œIt is a sacred duty to awaken your hearts [to the fact that] it is completely forbidden according to Jewish law to go up to the Temple Mount,ā€ the statement reads. ā€œThis prohibition has been simple and clear for a long time, and has been forbidden by all of the great Torah scholars.ā€ Because many different organizations have been calling on the public to visit the Temple Mount in recent months, the declaration continues, it is incumbent upon the signatories to reiterate that the prohibition remains.

The Temple Mount is Judaismā€™s holiest site, but Jewish law requires those going up to certain sections of the mount to be ritually pure ā€“ a status only obtainable through a ceremony that cannot be performed today.

Actually, that is true. That's always what I was taught growing up. It's the principle, though. I guess Muslims never learned to share in kindergarten.

There is a basis for this rabbi's opinion in Halachah--Jewish law. The problem is determining where the Holy-of-Holies is situated on the Mount.

That's not very accurate, the main reason is because it may risk lives, visiting the compound is allowed except for the Holy of Holies which is known to be in the center and is forbidden to step into.

Not surprising. Islamics frequently use mosques as staging/planning venues for terrorist activities.

The reason was in this case, Israeli forces broke into Al-Aqsa mosque compound Sunday morning firing stun grenades and rubber-coated steel bullets at Muslim worshipers as they cleared way for right-wing Jews who were visiting the compound to mark a Jewish fast day,
right-wing Jews began to make their way into the compound in groups via the Moroccan gate.

Israelā€™s minister of agriculture, Uri Ariel, was reportedly among the right-wingers to tour the compound under heavy police escort. Ariel is a member of Naftali Bennettā€™s ultra-right Jewish Home party.

Abraham's Tomb (known in Hebrew as the Cave of Machpelah) is shared peacefully by Jews and Muslims. Why can't the Muslims share the Temple Mount with the Jews as well?

Because the radical jews want the temple mount and instigate whenever they can. They want to restart sacrifices, and the secular ones like Bibi just want Israel control of Jerusalem, all of it.

Have you read the Palestinians charters and the Koran lately to see what the palestinians want ?

Palestinians fortified themselves inside of al-aqsa with rocks, fire bomb s and rockets to use against jews that came to the mount for Tish'a B'av, anniversary of the temple destruction.
Palestinians had no right to use the mosque for attack or to prevent jews from going to the mount for Tish'a B'av

The violence should not be tolerated, that is why security responded

Violence should not be tolerated, but Jews praying in the area of the mosque is forbidden under international treaty as I understand it.

Then you understand wrong as there is no International law forbidding the Jews to Pray in the vicinity of the Temple mount. But there is an International law forbidding the Palestinians from stopping the Jews from praying, and that is why the response to the breach of this law was force. Time for the al aqsa and dome of the rock to be dismantled and moved elsewhere, it has no religious or historical significance in islam what so ever.

AND ? ? ? what does this prove other than the Jews are more religious than the muslims and Christians

Well when some boys get motivated to have some fun with stones on a day that 2 Judean temples were destroyed...some archetypes wake up an take the main stage.

Just as it happens each time a siren starts.

OMG a Joooo using "arian" Jungian terms!!!! He MUST be a crazy drinking Christian blood Nazi ahhhhhh!!!
