Scientific Leaders from Israel and the U.S. Meet to Advance Research Between the Two Nations 
The United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation (BSF) has selected Mote to host its semi-annual Board of Governors meeting, which will focus on expanding opportunities to support its programs of scientific exchange between the U.S. and Israel.
BSF is an independent organization founded in 1972 that supports leading research projects between the U.S. and Israel. Dozens of Nobel-Prize laureates have participated in BSF and these efforts led to the 2004 Nobel in Chemistry of Professors Avram Hershko, Aaron Ciechanover (Israel) and Irwin Rose (U.S.). BSF provides grants for life sciences, medicine, environmental and marine research, physics, chemistry and a wide array of other disciplines. BSF is led by a Board of Governors comprising five Israelis and five Americans.
Mote has a long history of research in Israel and collaborations with scientists there. Motes Founding Director, famous Shark Lady Dr. Eugenie Clark, conducted some of her early fish and shark research in the 1950s with colleagues in the Red Sea. Today, Motes coral reef scientists frequently exchange information with Israeli coral experts working in the Red Sea as well.
In 2011, Mote took these collaborations to a new level with the creation of its own Mote-Israel Cooperative Marine Research Program. This program, which is independent from BSF, is designed to support research initiatives that benefit the environments of both nations, fund travel between U.S. and Israel for researchers and support postdoctoral research scientists.
This is a very important time for scientific exchange between the U.S. and Israel, said Dr. Michael Crosby, Motes Senior Vice President for Research. Each nation has vital marine ecosystems in need of greater study, along with outstanding scientists who are excited to work together. Were actively seeking ways to fund and expand Motes partnerships with Israels marine research and education communities.
Dr. Crosby is a former chairman of the BSF Board of Governors and has served on the Board since he was appointed by the U.S. State Department in 2002. He also led U.S., Israeli and Jordanian partners in the Red Sea Marine Peace Park Cooperative Research, Monitoring and Management Program an effort to protect coral reefs that support thousands of species in the Gulf of Aqaba. He has worked closely with top Israeli researchers since 1994.
With the creation of the Mote-Israel Cooperative Marine Research Program, we hope to increase our research ties with Israel. Were also very excited that the BSF Board has chosen to meet here at Mote, and look forward to helping this great organization expand U.S. Israeli science partnerships Crosby said.
