Israel to Prevent UN Mission from Investigating West Bank Settlements

Israel has said that it will prevent a UN fact-finding mission from investigating the legality of Israeli settlements in the Palestinian territories.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry said that it will not cooperate with the mission, and will stop its members from entering Israel and the Palestinian Territories
In July, the UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in the Palestinian Territories, Richard Falk, told a news conference that the increased building of settlements had "closed the book" on a two state solution.

Falk also laid blame at the door of the international community, which regards all Israeli settlements in the West Bank as illegal under international law. He stated, "The international community is conspiring, maybe unwittingly, in a process that has no way of bringing justice to the people involved in this conflict."

It is widely accepted that under international law, the Jewish settlements in the territories occupied by Israel in 1967 are illegal.

Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the protection of civilian persons in time of war states: "The occupying power shall not deport or transfer parts of its own population into the territories it occupies."

Within the international community the overwhelming view is that Article 49 is applicable to the occupation of the West Bank including East Jerusalem, the Gaza Strip and the Golan Heights.

Almost the entire international community, including allies of Israel, have referred to the situation in these territories as occupation.

The position that the 4th Geneva Convention does apply to the West Bank, Gaza and Golan Heights is supported by the International Committee of the Red Cross, UN bodies, and the International Court of Justice.

Israel is a party to the Geneva Conventions, and bound by its obligations.

Right In 1948 the borders of Israel could not be established because its arab neighbors refused to recognize the existence of Israel despite being bound to do so by UN rules. Thus a quaisi-border was established at the ARMISTICE LINE with real borders to be established at a later date-------that late date never happened and the borders have yet to be established Maps in muslim countries often do not even show Israel In the past sometimes if israel showed up on a map-----it would redacted in muslim countries . Fret not----someday there will be borders -----whether the mullahs and imams like it or not

Good point until the UMMAH agrees to recognize the EXISTENCE OF ISRAEL as a country against which the UMMAH does not have a policy the includes annhilation thereof -----it can have no borders You finally understand Right now there are armistice lines which tend to change with every war-----The definition of an ARMISTICE LINE----is the line at which parties in conflict agree to a temporary cessation of fighting------once the fighting begins again-----the armistice line is likely to change. There is now a debate as to whether the armistice lines constitute a "border" -----a condition to which the ummah has never agreed because sucn an agreement would have to include recognition and cessation of hostility -------cessation of hostility is impossible because it would require a complete change in school curriculums and library books thruout the ummah

It is true that Israel could not establish borders but it has nothing to do with the neighboring states.

Borders are a natural product of land ownership. The edge of land owned forms a natural border. That border says that everything inside is yours and everything that is not is not yours. You can't have land without borders and you can't have borders without land.
