TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- A member of Israel's parliament narrowly escaped an arrest warrant issued for him in London over the weekend for suspicion of war crimes, Israeli media reported.

Under advice from the security officials in Israel, Yedioth reported, Peretz pushed his return up from Sunday to Saturday evening -- a crucial move as the warrant was issued right after his departure.

Maan News Agency: Israel lawmaker 'narrowly escapes UK arrest warrant'

Well lets put this in perspective

With what is appalling timing, given the arrest of Sheikh Raed Salah a week ago on the order of the Home Secretary Theresa May, a certain Major General (ret.) Danny Rothschild is speaking in London on Monday 4th July at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in Whitehall; he will follow this on Tuesday 5th with a speech in parliament organised by the Henry Jackson Society, the fanatically pro-Israel think tank. While it is not unusual for high-ranking Israeli military and political officials to be visiting such institutions, the red carpet treatment of Israeli "Defence" Forces veteran Rothschild stands in stark contrast to the treatment of Palestinian leader Sheikh Raed Salah, arrested on the strength of tabloid gossip and Israel Lobbyists' pressure, and little else.

The difference in the treatment of these two men cannot but, yet again, serve to expose the hypocrisy and double standards of the British government which is, ultimately, responsible for who is and who is not allowed into our country, and who is and who is not afforded a public platform to espouse their cause.

Former IDF General Rothschild gets red carpet treatment while Sheikh Raed Salah gets prison cell

You won't need to look hard to find complaints about the arrest of Sheikh Raed Salah

Sheikh Raed Salah, a political leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel and three times elected mayor of the Palestinian city of Umm al-Fahm, was arrested last week from a London hotel. Normally, you would think one would have to commit a crime, or at least be suspected of committing a crime, to be arrested. This was not the case. Sheikh Salah, had entered the country with his Israeli passport, began his speaking tour of the UK, and even spoken in the House of Commons before the arrest. If he was really, as Home Secretary Theresa May seems to be suggesting, ‘not conducive to the public good’, then Parliamentary security must have been somewhat lax over the last few days.

From Arthur Balfour to William Hague, British Foreign Ministers have never hid their loyalties when it comes to the question of the Palestine; even from before the creation of the Zionist state in 1948. Over the week-end, Home Secretary Theresa May decided to join the party. On his third day in the UK, Salah was arrested from his hotel room, after right-wing newspaper commentators had denounced his visit. The BBC reported that an investigation would take place into how Salah had managed to enter the country, despite an exclusion order against him. A very strange type of exclusion order that neither Salah, his lawyers or the MEMO organisation who were hosting him here had been informed of. In regards to how he entered the country, the answer is quite simple; openly and freely.

As Dr. Hanan Chehata reported in the New Statesman, “The double standards operating here are chilling. While the government is doing its utmost to change the British laws on Universal Jurisdiction to make it easier for suspected Israeli war criminals to visit the UK without the fear of arrest warrants being issued against them, at the same time they are happy to arrest Palestinian leaders who have committed no [actual] crime…”

I wonder if we have got to a point in society where people can be arrested not on the basis of their actions, but on the basis of media hearsay?

Britain's global democratic image is being undermined by the arrest and detention of the Palestinian-Israeli freedom advocate Raed Salah in the same week that former Israeli Major General Rothschild has been allowed to address audiences in Britain. Rothschild was the commander of IDF Units in Southern Lebanon and co-ordinator of activities in the Palestinian Occupied Territories, where Palestinian deaths and gross human rights abuses have long since been reported. Raed Salah, on the other hand, has merely been hounded and slurred by the right wing British media, none of whom are accusing him of actually killing anybody.

New Statesman - Sheikh Raed Salah: a defence

LONDON, (PIC)-- British authorities have postponed the appeal hearing of Sheikh Raed Salah, leader of the Islamic Movement in Israel, due to the absence of a judge that has the power to decide in his case.

The leader of 1.7 million Israeli Arabs was detained a week ago under a travel ban that he learned about after entering the country to give a series of lectures.

Meantime, Israeli media sources say former Israeli Minister of Security Amir Peretz managed to evade an arrest warrant for war crimes issued in the UK as he was scheduled to lecture at the London University.

Sheikh Salah chose to remain in the UK to challenge the deportation decision which was based on allegations of anti-Semitism.

Authorities have allowed Salah legal visitation and his lawyers met with him for two hours without barriers in the Bedford immigration detention center.

Zahi Nujeidat, a lawyer and spokesman of the Islamic Movement in 1948-occupied Palestine, expressed optimism regarding Salah’s case. He said that if Salah wanted to comply with Britain’s orders he could have left for his country at any moment.

Israeli newspaper Yediot Aharonoth said former Israeli security minister Amir Peretz was able to escape from England from an arrest warrant over accusations of committing war crimes during Israel’s 2006 war with Lebanon.

He was able to evade arrest and flee the country before police got to him, according to the source.

That of course is what it is about and making sure our Government is not acting in a biased way. The issue you introduced concerns

Universal Jurisdiction | Amnesty International

We have had a problem recently with Pro Israelis wanting to get the law changed so that Israeli suspected war criminals will not be arrested and will be able to come here freely

Defend Universal Jurisdiction | Jews for Justice for Palestinians

I know this has gone through Parliament, I think it has been sent to committee...but both major parties used to want to make this change to excuse Israelis - Ed Miliband's view on Israel are not really known yet. He is keeping them close to his chest.

The second issue is extremely nebulous - keeping out people who are viewed as a threat to the country and was introduced after 9/11. This is what Sheikh Salah is detained about. If there was a problem he should have been told what the problem was before he arrived so that he could appeal and he clearly should not have been allowed in. But allowed in he was and gave talks both in Parliament and other places which gave absolutely no cause for concern...so there is concern about why he was deemed to be a threat and concerns that this is illustrating bias in the UK government.

Ropey clearly missed the point. Israel, it would seem was given the nod and the wink about the arrest warrant for Peretz so they could tell him and he could escape before arrest. The bias being shown is towards not against Israel.

Is this supposed to show the Culpability of One Israeli.....
or the running of part of a country/jurisdiction by a bunch of Lefist Anti-semites like alexa who nearly pulled it off?

You can never debate can you, you always wet yourself and get in a tiz..you just cannot argue a point, you need to abuse.

I suspect the reason is you have no argument.

Timore began by saying how Peretz had escaped the UK and avoided arrest. I thought that that gave a suggestion that the UK was anti Israel and that that was indeed a wrong evaluation. In order to show this I illustrated the treatment Sheikh Raed Salah was receiving as opposed to Danny Rothschild in order to show that if the UK government currently has a bias it would appear to be pro Israeli. Ropey seemed to think it was the UK government who wanted to arrest him rather than law as Tinmore pointed out so I clarified it.......and then you come on with this diarrhoea

Only people who are wanted for war crimes can be arrested under Universal Jurisdiction.

It is so with Peretz

On 12 July 2006, the suspect ordered the aerial bombardment of villages and cities in Lebanon, targeting essential infrastructure, such as water, food, fuel and electricity supplies. The bombing also damaged hospitals, clinics and schools - all places expressly prohibited from attack under international law. As a result of the bombing, ground assault and artillery fire, more than 1,200 people were killed including hundreds of children and elderly people.
On 8th November 2006, the suspect ordered the shelling of Beit Hanoun, a neighborhood in Gaza, in response to rockets fired toward Israel. For 15 minutes, residential neighborhoods were shelled, resulting in the deaths of 19 people, including 9 children. At least 40 people were injured. Firing shells deliberately and indiscriminately into civilian areas constitutes a war crime.
In August 2006, an official complaint was filed to the High Court in Morocco on the suspicion Peretz had committed war crimes and crimes against humanity. The suspect holds Moroccan citizenship. The complaint was filed by 3 Moroccan Jews, all renowned for their human rights work.

Wanted: Amir Peretz

You know that Israel used new rules of law in Lebanon 2006 The Dahiya Doctrine which allowed her not to abide by the rules of war concerning proportionality and care of civilians.

The Dahiya doctrine is an Israeli doctrine of military strategy pertaining to asymmetric warfare in an urban setting, in which the army deliberately targets civilian infrastructure, as a means of inducing suffering for the civilian population, thereby establishing deterrence.[1] Employed by the Israel Defense Forces, the doctrine is named after a Hizbullah stronghold in Beirut with large apartment buildings which were flattened by the IDF during the 2006 Lebanon War.[2]
The first public announcement of the doctrine was made by General Gadi Eizenkot, commander of the IDF's northern front, in October 2008. He said that what happened in the Dahiya (also transliterated as Dahiyeh and Dahieh) quarter of Beirut in 2006 would, "happen in every village from which shots were fired in the direction of Israel. We will wield disproportionate power against [them] and cause immense damage and destruction. From our perspective, these are military bases. [...] This isn't a suggestion. Its a plan that has already been authorized. [...] Harming the population is the only means of restraining Nasrallah."[3][4]

Perhaps not surprisingly, opposition in the United Kingdom to the sheikh’s presence stems from a campaign of character assassination led by pro-Israel groups.

They have accused him of a “blood libel” against Jews, based on information from dubious sources. When these claims were aired in Israel several years ago, Salah was investigated and charged. However, the prosecution was dropped a short time later for lack of credible evidence.

The other allegation — that he funded Hamas terror operations — relies on claims originally made by the Israeli government in 2003 during one of his many arrests. Although the state had reportedly accumulated 200,000 recordings of Islamic Movement phone calls, it never located in the conversations the smoking gun they expected to find.

Instead, Salah languished in jail for two years while his trial dragged on, the charges repeatedly reduced because promised evidence could not be produced. Eventually he agreed to a plea bargain in return for his release. He was convicted of funding Islamic charities for widows and orphans — loosely declared “support for terror” under Israel’s punitive crackdown on all Islamic networks, including welfare groups, in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Israel’s legal system, despite its reputation for presuming that Palestinian citizens are habitual security offenders, has neither found Salah guilty of anti-Semitism nor of directly helping terrorists.

That "universal jurisdiction" drivel aside, the british dambass leftbrained crowd is, actually, doing a good work of discrediting the standing of the left in Israel by, actually, chasing Peretz and Rotschild of the Labor and, previously, Livni, the chair of the Kodima kiss-butt party. Cool.
