Is “Vitriol” the New “Racist”?

Vitriol: bitter criticism: extreme bitterness and hatred toward somebody or something, or an expression of this feeling in speech or writing

Racism: 1. animosity toward other races: prejudice or animosity against people who belong to other races
2. belief in racial superiority: the belief that people of different races have different qualities and abilities, and that some races are inherently superior or inferior

Not the same thing. Although vitriol can be a part of racism but not all racists are vitriolic!

In an inteview on CNN, Robert Brady (D-Penn) said he wants to make it a federal crime to use threatening language or symbols against federal officials. “All we are trying to do is protect ourselves and our staff members,” Brady said.

Another attempt to infringe upon our first amendment rights. The feds have already taken some free speech and if this passes we will lose some more. An inch at a time and eventually we will wake up and find that we have nothing left. Does this mean we cannot hang effigies of politicians or burn them. Can we call them bums or is that illegal too. Pretty soon all you can say is only good things, no criticism because that incites others to violence.

It is an interesting topic.

On the one hand the position of legislators fearing for their safety is real, and the political climate is heating up as the economy remains weak. Remember many or most reps receive death threats occasionally, and numerous public figures have been targeted with things like anthrax envelopes.

On the other hand political free speech is the most protected kind of speech that exists.

One the third hand the internet is not explicitly a right, or a domain in which you should have unlimited freedom. It is a public space provided via private contracts. Your access can rightfully and legally be denied altogether. It can certainly be censored.

The left did not care about "vitriol" when it was directed at Bush for 8 years. I mean they OPENLY called for his assassination, including cartoonists with National followings.
This is just the government way to ramp up some new legislation to give them power over speech....good luck with that in the USA though, we wont fall for it unless there is some giant crisis and we stupidly look to the government to "fix" it .....
The reality is that nobody really knows what motivated the alleged shooter - so why are the "conservatives" already erecting the "barricades" for? damage control?

You 'Baggers need to quit being so dramatic....and, content-free.

What Free Speech was taken????? :eusa_eh:

Have you 'Baggers over-looked the possibility you're (all) frustrated-actors....that, in your (desperate) need for public-adulation, you've grasped at politics....when a (local) community-playhouse might fit your needs??!!!!

and the right has been doing the same since rush limbaugh was placed in every radio market in the country by ROGER AILLES (g bush the firsts campaign manager) in the late 1980s

your problem is that you defend VITRIOL from your friends while denouncing it in your enemies.

YOU are the enemy of reason
YOU are the enemy of America

never let a good tragedy go to waste.

and it is quite plain to see that conservatives are NOT wasting this opportunity...

between whining about liberals "politicizing" this "tragedy"
and actually BLAMING liberals for it....

You post this multi-colored goofiness and then have the temerity to ridicule someone else as having a need for public adulation?

You have the worst case of "notice me" out of anyone on USMB.

You 'Baggers need to get-over the idea something is true....just because you SAY it is!!

What....you FORGOT to post any PROOF of your accusation????

:eusa_eh:
Calling T.E.A. Party members "Baggers" is vitriolic.....
Only to the folks who admit being members!

Similar to the way the right didn't care about the budget or overspending during Bushs term but now its the most important issue when Obama is in office. There are double standards everywhere. It's how politics work, it's how the world works.

How many warnings do the least-educated (i.e. FAUX Noise & Porky Limbaugh fans) NEED????? :eusa_eh:

"Conservatives derided and dismissed an April 2009 report by the Department of Homeland Security warning law enforcement officials of a spike in violence fueled in part by "antigovernment" sentiments, which in retrospect appears to have been a chilling omen for the tragic Arizona shooting Saturday.

The report, which was coordinated with the FBI and titled, "Rightwing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment," warned of a rise in violence, spurred by the economic downturn and the election of the nation's first African-American president.

In the report, the DHS defined "rightwing" in part as groups and individuals "that are mainly antigovernment, rejecting federal authority in favor of state or local authority, or rejecting government authority entirely."

At the time, conservatives slammed the report as a political attack.

"The person who drafted the outrageous homeland security memo smearing veterans and conservatives should be fired," former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) remarked.

Conservative blogger Michelle Malkin called the report a "hit job on conservatives," decrying it as "one of the most embarrassingly shoddy pieces of propaganda I'd ever read out of DHS. I couldn’t believe it was real."

Various other conservatives joined them in denouncing it as an attack on political opponents, and one right-wing group even filed a lawsuit against DHS."

"After Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot on Saturday, Congressman Danny Davis' (D-IL) office reportedly received a threatening email warning that "Danny Davis is next."

Really? Personally, I think the guy's just a whackjob. WHo blamed liberals?
As USUAL....every time some "conservative" is a subject of a serious-"bust", politicians (typically, "conservatives") suggest BOTH-SIDES are equally-guilty!!!!! (Trying to sound bipartisan, no doubt. )

This happens TIME-AFTER-TIME!!!!!!!

I kinda get the idea that some groups are starting to "circle the wagons" because they feel that they will be partially blamed for this incident. This guy looks more like a John Hinkley type than anything else. Throughout our history our representatives have suffered threats and attacks from lone attackers. But there was no attempt then to screen them from the populace. Why now? I think that when the heat of the moment cools some, Congress will see that there is really nothing they can do to change the way they do business. Adding security if a credible threat is there is one thing but adding blanket security for everone is not possible, fiscally anyway.

"We're going to keep building the party until we're hunting Democrats with dogs."
- Senator Phil Gramm (R-TX), Mother Jones, 08-95

Hey OP....where'd you get these talking points?

Kinda cleva ain'tcha...."Is Vitriol The New Racist?"

CLASSIC!!!!
