Is this the end of Minor League Baseball?

This time Major League Baseball presented Minor League Baseball with a plan to essentially contract 42 minor league baseball teams by eliminating their major league affiliation while demanding that Minor League Baseball undertake far more of the financial burden of player development which is normally the responsibility of the majors.

Minor League ball was killed decades ago ... and this his the murder weapon...

Minor League attendance plummeted when people would watch Major League for free.

My favorite summer nights are spent in the stands of our minor league club with a hot dog and an ice cold beer....

Minor League attendance has been increasing.

MLB is killing the Golden Goose. Much of America does not have access to Big League games. They are either too expensive or too far away.

Minor League Baseball provides an opportunity for families to take young fans to see live games and become fans of the game.

MLB has already turned away young fans by putting games on too late and targeting corporate sales over families

Negotiations are getting ugly with Major League Baseball abandoning its ties to Minor League Baseball

Major League Baseball threatens to walk away from Minor League Baseball entirely

No, but it is a fact that the minors need to be smaller...

Minor League Players need better pay and those that would have been drafted can join Independent Leagues and hope Scouts from the Majors sign them...
They live in poverty.

As I wrote they need better pay...

Shrinking the Minors is a great idea if they raise the minor league salary or they base it off performance with a base salary...

My favorite summer nights are spent in the stands of our minor league club with a hot dog and an ice cold beer....

And you don’t have to pay $10 for a Hot Dog and $12 for a beer

i feel that each major league team only needs 2 minor league teams....how many kids are actually major league caliber?.....the way some of these guys play i would have been an all-star....

Sounds like MLB just wants to remove and replace the current MiLB administration ... so the individual minor league teams would get less money ... it wouldn't be smart for MLB to rely on college baseball, or they'd have the same problems the NFL is experiencing ...

But MLB has never been smart, so who knows what they're trying to do ...

Most low level Minor League teams struggle to break even. Take away a major league affiliation and they go bust.
MLB likes to tie up players with low ball contracts that last for years. What they want now is for the minor leagues to foot the bill for developing these players and then swoop in and take the cream of the crop

Wouldn't MLB be shooting themselves in the foot by doing this?

Seems short sighted

Minor League BB is the only access to live baseball that many Americans have.

MLB has sold out to corporate interests at the expense of families
Minor League survives off of families

I see your point ... but is the current system the most effective use of available resources? ... is it best to have a five tier system for the cream to rise up in, or would a two tier system work just as well? ... take a typical short season A league, how many MLB players are there? ... is that worth all the expenses? ... our local team drives 600 miles twice a year in a couple of buses, that ain't cheap ...

This is a business, not a social service ... if MiLB is top heavy, then they need to change ...
