In the mid-late 1970s Jimmy Carter was president.
We had growing stagflation.
We had a weak foreign policy.
We had a GOP weakened from Watergate and Democratic control in Congress and the White House
We had high taxes
We had obstreperous unions
We had ugly cars like the AMC Pacer and Gremlin
We had ugly music like disco
We were told WE were the problem

Now Obama is president.
We have growing stagflation
We have a weak foreign policy
We have a GOP weak from the Bush years
We have rising taxes
We have obstreperous unions
We have ugly cars like the Cube
We have ugly music like techno and rap
And we're being told we're the problem.

Coincidence?

I've said from early on obama's economic policy ie if an industry moves attack
It would have him risking Carter's fate. He has time, but if he doesn't get much better economic returns he could easily lose in 12.

We have growing stagflation

Inflation is low so are interest rates....nothing like Carter FAIL

We have a weak foreign policy

US has intensified attacks on Al Qaida and ramped up strength in Afganistan....doesn't look weak to me.....FAIL
We have a GOP weak from the Bush years

True....they are also weak from their dependence on the Tea Party and Fox News.....Correct
We have rising taxes

Taxes are lower than they were under Bush......FAIL
We have obstreperous unions

In a recession...unions are weaker than they have been in 30 years.....FAIL
We have ugly cars like the Cube

The Cube is not an American car....FAIL
We have ugly music like techno and rap

Correct....but rap is not a new phenomena, it has been around since Reagan.....FAIL
And we're being told we're the problem.

You are the problem Rabbi

One big difference between then and now, we have that catchy little pharse
1. "Yes We Can"

2. “Change” versus “More of the Same”

3. "Vote for Change"
4. "Change We Can Believe In"
5. "Our Time for Change"
6. "It's about Time. It's about Change"
7. "Stand for Change"

8. "Organize for Change"
9. “We are the change we’ve been looking for. Change can’t happen without you.”

10. "I’m asking you to believe. Not just in my ability to bring about real change in Washington . I'm asking you to believe in yours."
11. "A leader who can deliver change"
12. "Change in America doesn't start from the top down. It starts from the bottom up."

13. “Obama Momma”

14. "Women for Obama"

15. "Obama for America "

16. "A New Beginning"
17. "Help me take back America "
18. "My President is Black"
19. "Eight [years] is Enough"
20. " America , we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone."
21. "We must pledge once more to walk into the future."

every day the president of obama comes out to say how he saved us from another "great depression", no mention of the carter years.
if we start lining up at the gas pumps, i'll think you are prophetic

Do you know what stagflation is? Here's a hint: the "flation" part refers to inflation. During the Carter years (starting with his first full month in office), no single month ever had an inflation rate lower than 5.91%. The inflation rate climbed virtually on a monthly basis until it was in the double digits.

Today, inflation is very, very low (it was negative last year).

The top marginal tax rate is half of what it was in throughout the 1970s (70%). If EGTRRA expires, it would still be under 40%.

Nope this is a whole new problem.
Resulting from excessive and risky credit.
And shipping jobs overseas.
ie globalization and free trade.

Ohh and a healthy dash of shortsighted greed was included in this recipe.

You have to understand, Rabbi picked up the word stagflation and uses it over and over again assuming it will stick. In my lifetime, we have never had a lower inflation rate than we do now. Ask Social Security retireeshow they liked their adjustment for inflation last year

But Rabbi is all knowing. We don't have any inflation now....but the evil Obama policies will cause stagflation next year....or in three years....or in ten years....or

Someday the Rabbis prophecy will come true

The economy sucked under Carter, with massive job loss in key industries. It sucks under Obama, with massive job loss in key industries.
A distinction without a difference. I stand by what I wrote.

Different economic situations and different economic policy responses and you see "a distinction without a difference"?

I've seen sharper analysis in grade school book reports.

I stand by what I wrote.

You stand by your "observation" that we're experiencing stagflation and tax burdens comparable to the 1970s?

Nahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....it's more like the '90s.....obviously (to those old-enough to have been there)!!

"Clinton won the 1992 election against the Republican Bush and independent candidate Ross Perot, largely on a platform focusing on domestic issues, notably the economic recession of the pre-election period - using the line "It's the economy, stupid!", in his campaign headquarters.

Clinton's opponents raised various "character" issues during the campaign, including Clinton's apparent evasion of the draft during the Vietnam War, and his glib response to a question about past marijuana use. Allegations of womanizing and shady business deals also were raised. While none of these alleged flaws led to Clinton's defeat, they did fuel unusually vehement opposition to Clinton's policies among many conservatives from the very beginning of his presidency."

I guess we know how THAT worked-out.....

How do you explain the 10.8% unemployment rate under Reagan, two years into his presidency?

Carter unemployment was 7.2% when he left office...it soared under Reagan

There was no 10.8% unemployment under Reagan. Top rate was 9.7%, about what Obama has now. Difference is under Reagan it dropped to 5.5% when he left office due to his great policies that created jobs. Obama's policies have created stagnant to rising unemployment. The only reason the numbers don't look worse is people have been discouraged from even looking.
