It's a little odd, but it could just be their way of denying the reality of what happened (for now). When someone close to you has been ill for an extended period of time, and death is expected, sometimes it can be a relief when it happens, because it hurts to watch someone you love suffer. It's hard to say, and hard to explain, but everyone's reaction to death is different.
