Is there already a thread about this?

Imagine that, Alaskans getting cash from oil companies that they license to exploit their resources? Such unmitigated gall!

here is a story about it

Alaskans may get up to $1,000 each from surplus: Legislature | adn.com

I'm sorry, I think I'm confused...is Alaska a separate country? when you say THEIR resources surely you mean the United States, right?

By virtue of the fact that someone lives in Alaska I don't see where that makes them more entitled to a dividend than someone who lives in NY. We're ALL paying the high price of oil! Perhaps instead of stuffing the money back into the pockets of the people of Alaska Gov Palin would like to use that money for some of those earmarks that she's so fond of...

No but it's a separate state. States still do have some rights in spite of all the decisions to the contrary.

huh, the only thing he's good for researching is word meanings as listed at Urban dictionary.

This thread was really started as an opportunity to use his word of the day, "egregious". He has to use it 10 more times today. Be on the lookout.

FYI Sargetard's WOTD is "fraternal".

so while the rest of the country sinks lower and lower the Alaskans get to live basically off the backs of those of us paying high gas prices too?

that makes perfect sense. How about, sense they are connected to the united states that they give some of those profits BACK to the government to fund research to find renewable energy sources? oh wait, what the hell was I thinking, they don't want that cuz then they become less necessary to the rest of the country.

The oil pumped from Alaska goes into the WORLDS oil supply does it not? They don't exclusively use that oil for the American consumer so WHY are the profitting off it?

I live in Florida...I'm not getting a kick back for the fucking oranges we grow here damn it!

the state owns the land. the land has oil. the oil companies pay the state a royalty on the oil. the state keeps some of the money and sends a dividend to individual Alaskans. if you owned the land, would you feel obligated to send money to everyone else in the US?

Maybe we should. I'm going to write to Mel Martinez and ask him if we will get kickbacks from the oil industry if drilling happens off of our coast.

Ahhhh envy. I'm not going to pretend I know all the ins and outs of oil and mineral rights laws but what's the harm in a state making a profit without sharing with the rest of the country ?

If I owned the land as an individual, NO but since Alaska is a STATE and under the umbrella of the United States then YES...the profits should belong to ALL citizens of the United States not just the select few who HAPPEN to live in Alaska.

I don't expect profits from Iraq or any other country but Alaska isn't a COUNTRY by itself, it belongs to the country of the US...

I know this isn't difficult to comprehend...

States have rights--that shouldn't be that difficult to understand either.

so then NV, CT, NJ, et al should be sending part of their state licensed gambling revenues to the federal govt as well, right? I mean, it's not my fault that where I live doesn't license gambling, is it? I don't expect profits from Monaco, but Nevada isn't a country by itself, it belongs to the country of the US.

I don't think you'd give a rat's ass about this if Palin wasn't governor of AK; it's been going on for close to 30+ years.
