Have you noticed republicans only support political issues that affect them directly? It's easy to harp on issues like income tax and job growth because it's something affects their own lives. Now the leftwing (democrats) cares for these issues too, but the ideology of the left encompasses a broader range of issues like women's issues, gay rights, racial dynamics, poverty, and the middle class.

Many republicans are racist, homophobic and do not care about women's issues or those of the poor. It's all about looking out for number 1.

The truth is, progressivism in this country is inevitable. It's only a matter of time before republicanism becomes a thing of the past.

The gop is suffering from a deep distrust of it's own leaders. And after W, no one should be surprised. Not only did he abandon conservative positions, his staff directed the personal destruction of anyone who called that to like .... the Wilsons, David Frum and even Bill Buckley. Before Trump, people like Paul Ryan and even Rubio were considering how to finance a middle class tax cut. And how to continue universal coverage while making insurance more bottom up than top down in personal decisionmaking. But the gop voters are going for a populist message (not progressive). The Trump voters think the 1% is screwing them over, but they also think the 1% is using the illegals as just one tool.

The dems, imo, have a little different problem. Obama was so new, yet his inner circle of polls was made up of oldsters. Hill Biden Bill Gates, Pondesta, etc. And, Obama did not actively go after the very progressive issues his 2008 voters thought he would. He opted for the achievable, after pushing through the ACA and narrowly losing even that to filibuster. But Sanders is not really going anywhere, and most dems don't have a problem with Hillary, beyond worrying that she'll crash and burn.

HW was pretty much the first vp to win after his party had the presidency for two terms. But Gary Hart had to implode, and Duckass was a duckass. In many ways this is an interesting election. Hillary is obviously a crappy candidate. But, Nixon would not have won in 1968 without the Chicago riots, even though Humphrey had the corpse of Bobby Kennedy and the Vietnam casualties hanging around his neck. Even so, had he taken the usual MW suspects of Ill and Wisc as well as the formerly safe deep South, he wins. After that, the dems were barely hanging on. They went on to lose 4 out of 5.
