A few random comments:

The official position of the Roman Catholic Church on the Bible (basically, the O.T.) is that it is not a historical text, and that most of the "stories" are to be understood as allegorical (fables). And to the extent that historical information is transmitted, it is to be understood as coming from a people that did not value precision as much as context and intent. And of course, their understanding of science and the universe were severely limited. In sum, there is not much in the O.T. that can or should be taken at face value.

But this does not render it meaningless, just to be taken with a grain of salt.

Christians who take the Bible literally are actually quite a small minority, and primarily serve the interests of anti-Christian bigots who want an illustration of Christian primitivism. Like you.

Jews have often been reviled and persecuted throughout Christian history, and undoubtedly some of this was related to primitive and ignorant antagonism for those in the community who rejected and one-might-say "killed" Christ.
