Is raising your voice the same as yelling?

It is not yelling only if your listener(s) perceives it as such. Your perception of yourself, and intent are irrelevant.

Exactly. I am a high school teacher who never yells or raises her voice (well almost never). Yet a stern look or an angry tone will send some kids into a tizzy saying "Why are yelling at me?" It's ridiculous.

I think to YOU, you're not yelling you're just being enthusiastic.

To your listener, you're yelling at them.

I am so guilty of this in real life.

That's actually one of the reasons I enjoy posting in places like this.

Here my tone and volume of voice doesn't confuse the reader and make them think I'm angry with them.
