Education in America is a tough question for many citizens as well as specialists in this area.
The primary goal of our education is not to educate our students; it's to sustain the teachers’ unions and fatten the bank accounts of the college professors and administrators at our universities. This is why the education establishment hates private schools, school vouchers, and charter schools, even though they do a better job of educating students than our public school system. Actually I am not very surprised because money is higher than anything else in America.
But I am not sure that a huge amount of dollars will improve that decay of our education.
I don't believe that we will be more educated at the same time as we become richer.

Yup, it's broken. So we can't afford the system we created. So the system is broken and we just haven't prioritized that monetarily? Interesting.
Moreover the main purpose of the educational system is not to create thinking individuals. It is to create obedient workers. Is it democratic?

When we teach our kids Liberal ideology on social issues in our public schools and not any conservative ideology to balance that out, so that they can look at social issues on all sides that is called indoctrination.
It's the same exact thing that Hitler did to their youth.
Better yet, our schools should not be teaching any social ideologies period.

The so called "indoctrination" is a bunch of hub blub frankly. My kids attended public schools and they were not indoctrinated by anyone except me who told them

1) You will not join the military when you graduate
2) You will go to college
3) You will spend time at night doing homework and studying

and those three rules have led to them being very successful. They had a great education and were college ready.

I once interview several retired country teachers in Sabine Parish LA.

Sabine was as poor as any place in the GOUSA in the Depression.

These ladies talked of making their own textbooks, and schools with 8 grades in one room.

The turned out doctors, lawyers, military officers, teachers, and other professionals.

I daresay, the more money spent per student, the worse the results, because, it is not really spent on the students anyway.

I am sure the parents of kids that died defending this country just love your parenting hints.

Its not for everyone. I should have reworded but my rules were if you did join then I am not paying for stuff as college is and was expensive. Thats all. My kids were not aggressive enough to join up. I would have been okay with them joining but being educated was a huge priority for me. I see the mess of those who are not.

Well, as the father of a vet, I found the wording very, shall we say, tacky, to say the least.

Elitists fucks are why we need a draft; our wars should not be fought only by the patriotic and the poor looking for an education after service.

Yes. Our educational system is broken. Political correct and social correctness has taking the place of actual education. History is being rewritten to accommodate lifestyle choices and things that are socially popular now. Even through freshman college studies, correct grammar in formal papers is not stressed - indicating that the substandard requirements of technologically-driven communication is now the norm.

This doesn't prevent parents from broadening a child's education at home - but most parents are too lazy to do that.

We are at the point where most kids have parents and grandparents just as fuckin' stupid as they are.

This shit did not happen overnight.

Oh and oh how I hate that you are absolutely correct.
I hate stupid people.

Hate is so counterproductive and energy sucking.

I taught 25 years in rural shitholes.

I saw kids raised in barns(literally) finish college and return to teach in the same schools where they were taught.

I have seen kids do amazing things and make amazing sacrifices to escape poverty.

Really pisses me off to see parents allow their kids to remain ignorant.

Even ignorant, poor parents can encourage and expect achievement.

So sad so many do not give a shit.

If the schools aren't giving it, the parents should. That's the answer. I saw that sort of thing happen too. I come from a family of educators. Education begins and ends at home.

The standards have been lower to the lowest common denominator.
You can't expect greatness when that happens.

When most people graduate from high school they are old enough to tell the purveyor of such a 'rule' to shove it up his or her ass if military service is what they choose to pursue.

I think calling it broken presumes that at some time it worked well.

I find it really curious that this was written in 1959:

Science fiction as a factor in science education - Gross - 2006 - Science Education - Wiley Online Library

Now we live in a world where people have computers in their pockets. Get on a bus and half the passengers have smartphones in their hands and many of the rest have earphones in their ears and you can't see the phones. The are probably listening to music but it could be audiobooks.

LibriVox

The LA school system can screw up what technology to buy but I hardly see any mention of Librivox and Project Gutenberg in all of this discussion of what is wrong with education.

You need to define "broken" before you can reasonably propose ways to 'fix' something.

Perhaps we have too much technology today. Imagine if kids were not allowed to google things and had to think about problems and how to solve them. Has technology in excess hurt our society in some aspects? Food for thought.
